Shimano XTR Low Normal Advice

Has anybody used the Shimano rear mech that has the return spring moving the mech inwards ie changing to a lower gear? I have an old XT mech that needs repalcing and I've seen the XTR on sale at less than 40 quid.
With normal shifters I change to lower gears (bigger sprockets) with my thumb, higher ones with index finger. So presumably the low-normal xtr mech would reverse that.
I was wondering what it's like in practice on the trails.
