Hi just fitted a new chainset a Shimano Deore M532

Can anyone tell me if the plastic cap on the left hand crank (the thing that is used to pushed

crank up tight against the bearings) is meant to stay on the bike after the installation.

Or is it removed after the 2 bolts are tightened up?

Cheers

Paul :?

If you mean the screw then it stays in the crank. If you are referring to the round plastic tool that you put in the screw to tighten it up, that normally lives in a little hole in the BB spanner :)

    the preload adjuster?

    it stays there.

the clip that goes between the two bolts that stays.

Tighten the plastic preload cap up fully, then back it off abit. Then tighten the left hand crank bolts up.

Leave it tight ? Its the shape and size it is so unless you are yanking it round with a pair of mole grips or you are able to pull trees out of the ground with your fingers, you can't really over tighten it.

I've also always assumed that if the crank arm mating surface didn't meet the BB mating surface, you are risking allowing crap to eventually penetrate the BB.
