Not the usual tyre question!

Hi
After typing tyre in the search field and it returning 8 billion results, I need to ask for some help.
I have a Zesty 314 coming this week and want to swap out the RaceKings until the weather is a bit better. I think I have decided, after advice from on here, to go for High Rollers up front and Larsens out back (unless there are any other suggestions, just to confuse me further).
My problem is that there are so many options of each tyre, everyone on here says lower weight is best but do I go for folding or kevlar or are they the same? Single ply or double ply? Which rubber? Is 60 the soft, fast wearing one or the durable one?
Im going to go for between 2.2 and 2.35 but on a few websites some tyres are classed as FR or DH or XC. Is there a difference between them or is it just a width thing?
Finally (I think) wheres the most reasonable place to get them from? I've looked at the usual suspects ie Wiggle and CRC, but does anyone know of any others that are out there?

Cheers

  • durable on your rear, sticky up front :)

rear wears quicker anyways, and you'll need most grip upfront.

Also, if your going tubeless then get single ply, only double if your doing DH/very rock stuff.

the difference between the xc, fr and dh versions is just the width range. the lower the durometer rating, the softer the tyre.

If it's purely for the winter months I'd just get some proper grippy tyres, don't fret too much over weight. You'll go like a bat out of hell when you get those Race Kings back on in the dry.

I'd personally just stick a couple of 2.35" kevlar High Rollers on there, cheap and do the job. Sticky on the front if you ride anywhere with rocks. The Race Kings are a bit odd for Continental, they come in a lot wider than most of their range, you might find Maxxis come in a bit smaller in comparison.

Very light tyres those Race Kings though. Quite fancy a set myself for the summer, were it not for the stack of tyres I have in the shed :)

I'm tubeless and have a Maxxis 42a 2.35 High Roller up front and a 2.1, 60 Maxxis Ignitor on the rear. Went for this combo for up front wide footprint and sticky grip with a lower weight more durable rear to help things move. Not bad so far.....

Wow, I nearly missed this! Good question and nearly everything I've needed to know answered :D

I have an EX8 and went tubeless. I have 50 quid in Halfords vouchers I've had since Chrimbo and have found nothing to spend it on till now. In preparation for the mud bath later on in the year and most of this year, I've decided to get some tyres from Halfords.

I do mainly XC but try and get up Cannock once a month. I'm not loaded so need hard wearing. Should I go with pilsburypie who's advice got me so well through my tubeless conversion (thank you very much  ) and get Maxxis 42a 2.35 High Roller up front and a 2.1, 60 Maxxis Ignitor on the rear or Toasty's advice and go all out for the 2.35" kevlar High Rollers?

    Thanks all

Thanks for all your responses fellas.
I now know that kevlar and folding are one in the same
Think Im going to go with Toastys suggestion. My previous bike, a Cannondale F6 had a very basic wheelset, which I presume was very heavy and CST Caballeros at 730gr. So I reckon with my new Mavic Crossrides and High Rollers that weigh less than the old Caballeros, I will notice the difference and get tons more grip, but when I get the RaceKings on it should be even better still :D
    Cheers again guys

ps My Zesty has been delayed and wont be here til next week now, so another frustrating weekend without a bike, what a bummer
