Broken Pump?

Hello,
Got a Topeak pump here that has been used over the last 4 or 5 years. Got a flat tire going up to the city today, came back home to change the tyre, and when I tried to take the pump off of the tyre, it ripped out the innards of the Presta valve with it, meaning all air came out. I put in another tube and tried again, and it did the exact same again. I've pumped up presta tyres many time before so don't think i'm doing anything wrong. Does this sound like the kind of fault a pump could get?

Solved, used my mates pump and it was fine, yet Mum and Mum's boyfriend still think I was doing it wrong. Even though I took it off and put it back on again about 3 times. :S
