Hi guys
I need a new bike to go to college and come back. The college is like 2 miles away. At the moment I have a crap rhino bought from toys r us, Its very uncomfortable to ride and makes my journey miserable.
I have a price range of £400.
The bikes I am interested in are
Scott Aspect 55

GT Aggressor XC 3 http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165499

GT Avalance 3

Carrera Kraken

Carrera Banshee

Which one would you recommend. Which breaks are better hydraulic or mechanic, do these make any difference

My take on bikes is: Buy what suits you, but try and test ride it first.
Regarding brakes, hydraulic are superior to cable discs when it comes to stopping power
They also require less maintenance - no cable/s to stretch or snap.

But when they do go wrong, they do so more spectacularly ;-)

Have a read of the What Hardtail thread in the buying section for more ideas.

Banshess is a very heavy full suss bike, not sure you need a bike like that.

Banshee is probably the first one to lose.

But! Halfords are doing 20% off Carreras when you reserve one, so tbh forget the Kraken, £400 gets you an 08 Fury just now which is basically undiluted win ;) The Kraken holds its head up well in this company too so if you prefer to go a bit cheaper, it also has the 20% off- £320. I have one in the garage, it can't hold a candle to my Scandal but then it cost about 30% as much so it's only fair- it's a decent performer though.

But still, I'd go straight for the Fury, it's an incredible buy for the price. Tora 318 u-turn fork, X7 drivetrain, nice frame, adequate wheelset and crankset, good finishing kit. It's a wee bit burly, but then the improved components mean it doesn't end up ridiculously heavy for it. All in all, there's nothing else at £400 I'd even consider. YMMV ;)
