front mech problem - help?!

I took the mick out of reddragon on here yesterday about his sora setup...so today my sora front mech has gone all wrong serves me right.
anyway, it's a triple and won't shift onto the smallest chain ring. I've followed zinn and park tools, and still no joy.
Whilst fettling I have noticed that I can push the mech further over than it springs itself. i.e. when I change onto the smallest chainring, the chain refuses to budge, but there is still play in the mech itself. Funnily enough, once i've pushed it over, the chain drops nicely...Is this the problem? How do I solve it?!
Hope someone can help...

That usually means the cable and/or housing has a sticky area that won't quite let the cable "relax" that last bit.
Another area that oft gets ignored is the plastic slider underneath the bottom bracket. Road grit can roughen the cable track so it doesn't slide as freely as it needs to.
Replace the cable/housing and the BB slider and that'll fix it.
Then the cable will relax enough to let the derailleur move all the way down to the inner ring again.0 -
thanks mapei.
it's working now. I cleaned up the BB slider (and took the front mech off and reinstalled from scratch). Hopefully I won't need to change the cable!0 -
perfect, you're back on the road! Glad to help!0
