10 speed derailleurs/cassette with 9 speed STI?
This may sound like a daft question but I'm building my first bike from S/H parts (because it's all I can afford) and I need some basic advice about what will work with what.
Desired outcome - 18 speed Audax type bike (but not for competition)
Purchased so far
Kinesis Racelight T frame
Ultegra 53/39 crank
105 9x2 STi levers
Will they fit:
105 or Ultegra 10 speed front and rear dérailleurs
105 or Ultegra 10 speed cassettes (yes, I realise that only 9 of the 10 speeds are likely to work).

Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can't, you're probably right.

yes they should be fine, I have done 9 speed STI's with 10 speed mechs,, Only thing different is when fixing the rear mech cable ,fix it in front of the allen bolt, 10 speed goes behind if the makes sense,,,, never tried 10 speed cassette with 9 speed STI's??0

A 10-speed cassette won't work with 9-speed shifters - you'll only be able to get it indexing over part of the cassette.
Why do you want a 10-speed cassette? - 9-speed are cheaper and will work properly.0 -
There appear to be more S/H Shimano 10 speed cassettes etc offered for sale, both on various forums and eBay (and at lower prices) than the 9 speeds that I've seen advertised.Whether you think you can, or whether you think you can't, you're probably right.0

A. I wouldn't buy second hand wear parts, how do you know how worn they are?
B. A 10 speed cassette will not work with nine speed STI units.
The Kenesis Racelight is a lovely frame, don't forget you will need deep drop brakes.0
