Single speed kits... Recommendations?

Hi, I've got an old mtb sat in the shed, and the gears are shot. I'd like to get it running again as a fun bike and a pub bike. So to avoid extra outlay, and to try it out, I want to build it back up as a singlespeeder.
Having had a quick look around the net it seems there are quite a few different ways and kits to do this. I just want simething simple, something cheap, but that will work. Are the kits on ebay worth touching? So any recommendations for brands or methods that are worth using? Plus anything in particular I have to be aware off?
Many thanks, Jess.
