Single speed kits... Recommendations?

Hi, I've got an old mtb sat in the shed, and the gears are shot. I'd like to get it running again as a fun bike and a pub bike. So to avoid extra outlay, and to try it out, I want to build it back up as a singlespeeder.
Having had a quick look around the net it seems there are quite a few different ways and kits to do this. I just want simething simple, something cheap, but that will work. Are the kits on ebay worth touching? So any recommendations for brands or methods that are worth using? Plus anything in particular I have to be aware off?
Many thanks, Jess.

Proved by testing to be faster than a badger.

Hi bigbenj, thanks for that link, I've had a look at one of those in the LBS.
Is that one you've used? Or just the result of a quick search through CRC? I've seen plenty of cheaper ones around too, which is why I was after a personal recommendation.
Thanks for the suggestion though, Jess.Proved by testing to be faster than a badger.

The Gusset 1ER looks good and works well. It's the bit that replaces the cassette.

You'd need a tensioner still. I use a DMR bb mounted tensioner with it.

I've cut the seat tube clamping bit off. The bb holds it well and it is easy to adjust that way if it gets knocked.
I think it looks better having the rear of the bike free from any mechs or tensioners.

My vote goes for the On One kit
Convertor kit: http://www.on-one-shop.co.uk/acatalog/O ... t_201.html
Tensioner:http://www.on-one-shop.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Tensioners_200.html
A lot cheaper than the DMR kit0 -
cheapest way = break up an old cassette, use bits of plastic pipe (think drainpipe stuff) as spacers. Any of the kits should do fine. Tensioner - most work well but obviously detract from the look of the bike, which is obviously not a good thing. If you can find a magic ratio (ie gear ratio which will let you run without a tensioner) then even better, or a half-link is always an option. In an ideal world you'd obviously go for a White Industries ENO hub, but you did say cheap0

Another vote for the On-One kit. Cheaper than the others but with no performance drawbacks. I've been well pleased with mine.0
