Gears won't index properly

I'm just in the process of tidying up my old Giant escape M1 to sell to a colleague.
The only problem I'm having is that the gears won't index properly.
I can get them to index fine in one direction, but then not the other.
I've checked the cables aren't frayed and catching, they seem fine.
Would a warn chain cause this problem?
Any tips as to what else to look for.
Cheers

Assuming the direction it won't shift it is down the cassette, it's a classic symptom of a sticking cable.0

Clean out the cables/housings.
Which shifters are you using? Cheaper plasticy ones tend to go "out" after a bit.0 -
Sussed it!!
Taking the gear lever housing off I found a small birds nest of frayed wire... guess I need a new cable!
Shame I just ordered a new chain and cassette thinking they were worn and affecting the gear change!
Oh well my colleague will have some new shiny bits he wasn't banking on getting!0 -
Just keep the chain and cassette. You'll need to replace them eventually.0
