Hi guys,

Im looking to get an audax. As a student im wondering if it is possible to get one in the range of £400 - £500?? What are my options as I'm struggling to find anything in the region.

Failing that I think im going to have to see if I can stretch to a Sorosa audax pro... I can see reviews of a Sorasa audax that i could go with, but its not on their site

Any ideas??

Ribble do a Winter Training Audax 7005 Mirage 10 Double for
    £589.95

It is like an audax bike in most respects although the purists would probably prefer a steel frame, and some might want a triple.

Most years, at some time, they seem to sell them off a bit cheaper.

Ridgeback Horizon - about £550 ish..

I use one as a winter trainer and it is a great bike - rides well and very comfortable for distances. Sold as a fast tourer, so plenty capable of a few Audaxes...

Giant SCR range are good bikes for audax. You could probably pick up a good used one for £300 (leaving some money in your budget to upgrade the poor wheels). Otherwise a Giant Defy would do you. There really is no need to get a steel framed bike that's called an 'audax' bike to do audax. The main reason you see so many steel frame bikes on audaxes is to do with the fact that there are so many old codgers audaxing. I did once have a steel audax bike (Aravis from Byer cycles) and it was a nice bike (ultegra/105, open pros, etc.), but I actually prefered my Giant SCR2.0 so got rid.

Most important thing if you're thinking of longer audaxes of 300km+ is comfort. Just cos it says its an 'audax bike' doesn't mean its gonna be comfortable for you....
    More problems but still living....
  • You might want to look at the Surosa Audax. I've had mine for about 3 months now and it's great!. More comfy than my Planet X SL Pro Carbon :?

Audax bikes do tend to have 28mm tyres for a bit more comfort. However, most frames that have room for mudguards and use long reach brake calipers should take 28mm to 32mm tyres!

That's the weird thing with the Surosa, when mudguards are fitted there's only room for 23mm tyres.
