Bicycle design

This idle thought popped into my head as I was cleaning my chain today, and I may be missing something obvious, so please feel free to put me straight.

It occurs to me that all standard bikes have the drivechain on the rider's right hand side. Is there a reason for this, and if so, what is it? Do some bikes (other than custom builds, odd designs etc.) come with the chain on the left as standard?

Is it because it's always been like that, and is there any reason why they shouldn't be on the left, other than the fact that right side seems to be industry standard?

Cheers,
Steve

It's always been like that. You can't really switch sides because the mechs wouldn't work. On a singlespeed it can be done as long as you're not using disc brakes, BMX riders have been doing it for years.
