I can find loads of wheels with freebodies for shimano cassettes but i want some decent, handbuilt wheels for my new audax bike (wheels must be under £200) ideally i want the best hubs i can get and as long as the rims are mavic i'm not too bothered about much else.

i know if Harry Rowland and Paul Hewitt but can't find much on Pauls site about wheel building and i live nowhere near the shop!

i want to go with a really good wheel builder not just my LBS, they can build wheels but i'd rather have someone who has built 100s, maybe thousand of wheels

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Don't be put off by non-Mavic rims. Mavic is making it more difficult to buy their rims, so people are looking at alternatives. DRC and Ambrosio are two Italian companies that are making up ground. Ambrosio rims are very good.

Now that Campag have discontinued most of their hubs, you ought to consider Miche Racing hubs too.
  • Harry Rowland can build onto Ambrosio hubs - really, really good hubs, well sealed and very smooth indeed. I have two pairs of wheels he built for me - one with open pros and one with ambrosio evolution rims, the open pros were used for Paris-Roubaix last year and remain totally true despite my 85Kg. Would buy again in a heartbeat.

Paul H stocks ambrosio rims - but they aren't that cheap atm.

Mavic OPs would come in cheaper I suspect, but there have been some stories recently that weren't so complimentary about the latest batch of OPs. Whether there is any truth in the rumours I don't really know.

I would suggest the Ambrosio hubs and either Harry Rowland or Paul Hewitt for the wheelbuilding - they'd be able to advise on rim choice too.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
