  • over this past summer i had a nasty meet with the ground and a parked car, i had just stopped at a stop sign and i start switching to 2-5 (i don't know how to put the gears really) and i was putting a hole bunch of torque on my crank and pedals and my chain skips the little thing that moves your chain up to the next ring. and my feet go flying my feet hit the ground about twice then i eat it.

my head smashes into the rear bumper of a parked car my neck compressed, my right knee has 2 huge cuts and 1 medium sized ones, the huge ones were about the size of 2-3 quarters and the smaller one was about 1-2 quarters big. then i had to go talk to the owners of the car about it and stuff while i'm bleeding and the lady is almost freaking out and its not even her car.

then i have to limp home and i live on the same block. :| and i have to try and clean my self up.
    6' 3" and size 17 shoes(us) only 16 and i ride a trek 4300 07 (got it on 2-7-07) and i have 470 mile on it. with countless scars.

Last August I was up on the north coast of scotland surfing and had my bike too to do some trails namely golspie.

Anyway after a few days of rain my chain was looking a bit rusty as it'd been on my van rack. I decided as i was parked up ofr the afternoon I d get it off and clean up the chain but firstly Id have a little blast as you do. I couldnt resist the grassy bank that led down towards ther beach so I thought i ll ride down there and then get on with the chain cleaning. Off i set and half way down the grass bank was repalced by a 10 m drop and I was going way too quick. Over the bars it was and my last thought was f&*k I dont have my helmet on. Well actully it was best get a hand or something in the way of that big rock.

My wife saw all this and ran down to pick my head off the rock getting a lovely view of my skull which was emitting blood some what quickly. She thought at that point I was gonna die I was unconscious and in a bad way. Fortunately an ambulance was on scene within 5 mins as the paramedic lived in the small village and took it home as part of the cover. I was strapped to a strecher with suspected broken back and suspect punctured lung and a whole load of pain that was dealt with by entonox.... The enxt 3 days are a bit of a blur spent in wick hospital unable to move until confirmation of my spinal condition was assessed. Meanwhile my head was all stiched up and thankfully I have since made a full recovery. I later found out that 2 others have fell foul of the same misadventure 1 of whom died and the other was paralysed. To sum it up I m one lucky guy. There will be no doubt those who say what a knob. no helmet but it really was just one of those things. Thankfully I survived and the one thing that has come of it all is every day since has been so good to feel alive.

    Dan

Ps thats the first time i ve been able to talk like that about this and damn it feels good.

    Enjoy your riding folks

Slimer's story has reminded me of a crash I witnessed a year ago.
Stood outside a cinema in Hyde Park, Leeds, when a cyclist comes bombing down the road, and decides to hit the speed bump in the road and do a little jump. So he gets some air, lands, and turns immediately right to go up the side street. He then slides off and his bike skids down the road and he rolls to a stop.
Wouldn't have been so bad if the crowd of people outside the cinema weren't all waiting to go in to watch Seasons! Got everyone in the mood ;)

My worst crash was when I was about 5/6 I think. Bombing down a hill near my house, the road turns left at a 90degree angle, we had a friend at the bottom to tell us if a car was comin, all was clear for me though. As I slam on the brakes, I quickly discover the pads were now none existant. So I went full pelt, head on, into the curb, flew over the handlebars, cleared a 2 foot high wall and had my fall caught by a rose bush
It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Had loads of crashes that should have been a lot worse than they turned out... should have had plenty of borken bones but luckily I've had none! I think that its nearing the time for a bit of pain again!!!
  • Plenty of crashes cant be a**ed to write them so will the consequences do ? Two fractured elbows, fractured left knee, cheekbone and eye socket shattered in 3 places and nerve damage to the left hand not all in one crash that would of been horrific !! As it were they were all pretty painful in there own cute little ways ha ha !!

Mines a pretty stupid one but painful. I was going quite fast down a pavement (i know i should have been on the road) and looked up and a bus shelter was there, I misjudged the width and the edge of my handlebar clipped the shelter, i got thrown of the bike, broke my wrist on the pavement scrapped one legg from ankle to knee and i came to a stop in a thorn bush. The bike wasn't so lucky, one of the brake levers was completely snapped off and the gear lever torn off with it, the bar and stem were cracked in various places, my brand new fox fork was completely scratched, the disc rotor got bent almost at 45 degrees and somehow the seatpost snapped?! Ween I painfully sat up all I saw was a kid laughing at me from across the road!

Going far too fast for my own skills at Afan I managed to faceplant directly into a rock:

It was even better the next day when my face started to swell, but thankfully I don't have pics of that.

Worst part of it all, couldn't eat properly for days because I bit my tongue.

3 fractured ribs, two dislocated fingers, fractured right knee cap, dislocated right shoulder numerous scabs, scars and other scrapes... makes you wonder if cycling is really good for your health!

Was cycling with a guy who slammed his front brake on to avoid some ducks who 'panicked' as we were riding alongside a canal in Birmingham one day - he knocked his front teeth out on his stem... the teeth ended up in the canal. Looking back, it was a nasty incident but we p*****d ourselves laughing. Lesson learned.

I heard a noise from the front derailleur so looked down to see if the chain was rubbing.

The next thing I knew my chin was bouncing across the bonnet of a red Escort XR2i.

I had crashed into a stationary, empty car.

Been on the other side of that type of incident

Oh, one day while in Aylesbury, I parked on a road in an industrial estate, as I was about to get out of my car (Renault Laguna 2) I heard a loud thump and the car moved.
I looked in the mirror and there was nothing there, I looked up and saw a face through the (closed) sunroof, there was a bloke on my roof..
This youngster came flying around the bend on his MTB, ran out of road and slammed into the back of my car. Being a hatchback, he slid up the rear window and came to rest on the roof

I got out, asked if he was okay, he seemed a little confused, apologised, clambered off the roof, picked up his bike, got on it, tried to pedal and fell over as his front wheel was badly buckled and rubbing on the fork.
I then insisted he sits down and get's his act together, anyway he worked next door to the building I was based in. He was fine, just a little rattled at the time

The damage to the car comprised of, rear right tail light lens broken, rear boot spoiler cracked, rear wiper arm broken and a dent int he roof from his knee when he tried to get off the roof. Also a nice tire mark on the rear bumper.
The MD took pity upon the poor youngster and paid for my company car to be repaired across the road at Panelcraft at our cost.
