Went out this morning and for the first time when I TRY to shift down a gear nothing happens then when pressing 2nd time the chain jumps two cogs to the wrong gear. To rectify the problem i,ve then got to shift up once,Its a pain in the bum.

Does anybody know what the problem is and would a Service Fix this problem?

Probably just the cable tension not being right - or muck in the cables.

It's the sort of thing a service would address but it's not hard to do it yourself. Parktool.com has very good instructions on how to set up your gears.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

If the cable tensioner has not been touched then this problem is usually caused by the gear cable sticking within the outer cable. The last section of outer which forms a loop before entering the socket of the cable clamp is normally the cause. To do a proper job means disconnecting the rear cable and lubricating the cable and outer but this means setting up the tension. You could upend the bike and try pouring oil down this loop which may do the job.

Has the stop on the chainstay got a slot in it. If so you can clean and lube the loop without upsetting the indexing. Put the gear into the big cog, then without turning the pedals take hold of the cable on the long run by the down tube and move the shifter to top gear. The cable will now be very slack. slip the end out of the stop and slide the outer along the inner to expose the back section. Clean and grease this and slide back. If it still seems sticky then do this several times with a bit of WD40. When satisfied just refit the outer back in the stop and turn the pedals to put it back into top gear.

I've been having a similar problem on my Focus Cayo Triple (07 model, 105 mechs and shifters). I was out on a ride yesterday and at some points, I was unable to change up into the largest chainring, then sometimes, I would flick the lever to shift down from the large chainring and it wouldn't budge but with another shift would go down to the granny ring. No idea what's causing it - my feeling is that it's something to do with the shifter or the cable and not the mech itself
