I've currently got a set of Mavic Aksiums 2007 that came with the bike and am thinking about upgrading to a better set of all rounders.

I weigh around 60kg. 58kg the last time i weighed myself - a good while back.

What's the best medium priced set of wheels for my kind of weight ? Or would it be better value to go for hand made ones? How much would i have to pay to get something decent?

Would there be any point in just upgrading the rear wheel and consigning the aksium to turbo duty? I guess if i go for handmades i can just get one wheel to reduce the cost in the short term.

Regards just upgrading one wheel - due to budget constraints, I upgraded my Rear wheel to a reasonably lightweight Kysrium SSC SL (840 g) - very pleased - so it can done, with no detrimental effects - not really bothered how it looks (hardly noticeable tbh).

Regards a pair, the new RS80's look good - 390g rims, good hubs. Also, the 09 Kysrium Elites have introduced ISM, hence a decent weight loss at the rim. As a basic set of all-rounders, and an improvement on Aksiums, I'd be happy enough on either pair.

The new Ksyrium Elites look good value - only 70g heavier than Ksyrium SLs but if you can find a pair, American Classic CR420s are as light as Ksyrium SLs but noticeably a lot more aero when sprinting at 50kph plus - not the stiffest laterally, but I weight pretty well the same as you and don't find it a problem.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Easton wheels are good. Factory but made by hand. I weigh 65kg and have the EA90 SLX. Absolutely superb. Very smooth bearings and nicely put together.
done about 2000 miles on them including last year's wet etape, Dragon ride and numerous club runs. Light too at only 1490gm the pair.
