SRAM quality equivalent to Shimano and Campag groupsets.

OK in a previous thread I asked for advice matching up the quality equivalent Campag and Shimano groupsets.

The conclusion was:

Sora
Tiagra
Veloce/105
Centaur/Ultegra
Chours/Dura Ace 7800
Record/Dura Ace 7900
Super Record
in a league of its own - This I find astonishing given that Cycle plus said something along the lines that Chorus 11 was the best groupset tested ever. Still I digress.

The above would somewhat make sense behind the motivation of Shimano raising the premium of their groupsets to appear (in terms of quality) on par with Campag. (Dura Ace now costing around the same as its Campag quality equivalent).

What I'm interested to know now is where do the SRAM groupsets fall in this quality chart I seem to be creating.

redddraggon and I have had our differences of opinion but I must agree with him on his SRAM comparisons...

By the way, I've got Campag, Shimano and Sram equipped bikes and although all the groupsets perform well SRAM Rival is about as good as it gets for the recreational/Sportive rider IMHO. Best leave Dura-Ace, Red, Super-Record etc for the sponsored, super-rich or super stupid riders out there!

I was looking at the 105/Veloce or Centaur, Rival, Ultegra end of the market.

Personally I'd go for Centaur...... the only Rival user I know has ditched Rival for some old Reocrd he had :D .... but I think he's happy with his Red though.

I'd have to go for the carbon option... I have a feeling I'm not getting this bike this year... :?

SRAM Rival brakes and shifts better than Ultegra IMO and its lighter than Centaur so...

Not that I'm unhappy with my Campag Centaur/Mirage/Veloce equipped bike - the shifts are good enough for all but the most fussy and you just can't beat Campag for looks and longevity so really your final choice would be down to asthetics/availability...

Campag seems a lot more value for money at the moment. Shimano is getting too expensive with the strength of the Yen and those shifters are still big ugly lumps if you ask me!

Some people just can't get their head around shifting up and down the block with one shifter - that's why they go for something a bit more simple - Homer Simpson would use Shimano!

I religously ride on the hoods of my bike. It's sora shifters so I don't have much option are Campag hoods slender too the point that I can no longer ride my hoods?

Nope, I ride mostly on the hoods of my Campag bike - unless you've got hands like a bunch of Bananas you'll be just fine!

Campag hoods are a million times comfier than Sora shifters.

I currently running 10spd veloce shifters + 8spd sora mechs/chain/cassette - I'm glad I dumped the piece of crap Sora shifters.

The new Campag hood shape is a big improvement for me, I reckon you'd be fine with those. Lots of carbon on Centaur - levers, rear mech, chainset - its a really nice looking groupset and the shifting is lovely and smooth. My mates are happy enough with Ultegra (on custom built Litespeeds). No real experience of SRAM.

I have SRAM Force on my good bike, Looks beautiful IMHO. Brakes are excellent. Shifts down the block are brilliant. Shifts up can be a bit clunky if you don't get the doubletap action quite right. I got some deals on the shifters & calipers, I would struggle to justify it at full price tbh.

  • Incidentally what's the overall view on the Campag Xenon groupset? Only ask as I'm speccing my new bike out on Ribble (after my BeOne arrived mangled). Price-wise it's halfway between Sora and Tiagra, worth the upgrade or shall I stick?

Centaur is pretty good, had it on my Wilier, must admit though that Chorus is just lovely, shifts like an absolute dream. Might treat myself to 11 speed later on this year...

When I was in the process of deciding the spec for my race bike, I tried out Rival. It is seriously nice, and frankly I prefer it to Ultegra. But although they may be on the same "level", Rival was at a serious premium to Ultegra (at the time) - so I ended up playing it safe (and cheap) and just sticking with Shimano.

PS I have no idea why the font a gone all weird.

Agree with that. I has a b@stard job trying to index my Centaur FD once. Chorus FD is a piece of cake. Rear shifting is smoother on Chorus.

Oddly enough, I now have a Centaur front mech on my good bike and a Chorus front mech on my winter road bike / sunny day commuter. Would it be worth the aggro of swapping them over?
  • I want to upgrade my bike to a Centuar or ideally Chorus groupset. I have all Shijmano at the moment but I need a new cassette can I start by buying the Campag cassette? Or is it going to mess things up if the rest of the gearing is all Shimano??

Did you shift gear, mid-post?

ITB has some unholy Shimagnolo mess on one of his bikes.

I have a vague idea that the spacing between the sprockets is different, so that it's pretty difficult to get Campy shifters to consistently place the cage directly under each sprocket as you shift.

That could well be wrong. I'd say 50/50. With 100% margin of error.
