Grinding brakes

Hi all,

Could someone please help with a newbie question? On my way into work today my rear brake was making a grinding sound. Having wiped round the rims (which have a lot of black on them) and cleaning the pads it still seems to be there. I'm a bit reluctant to take the thing apart in case I can't put it back together - and I'll have a long 12 mile walk.

The bike is about 8 months old and I've done about 700 miles. Could it be that they just perish after a certain amount of time?

I have TekTro CR720 brakes (with the stock pad things) but can't quite understand having looked on various bike shops what I need. I'm confused about brakes, brake blocks and brake pads. I'm assuming I need brake pads?

Is there a 'good' pad that people tend to choose or does it require a bit of research?

Edit: I'm reading quite a bit about Kool Stop brakes but can't work out which ones would fit my rims i.e. Mavic Aksiums. Wiggle have a quite a selection and I can't work out which would fit my TekTros.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

It looks to me like these will fit:

in the threaded version, as shown near the bottom of this page:

This is supposition however, as I've never handled those specific brakes.

Are your brakes the CR720 cyclo cross ones. If so you need V brake pads. Are your current ones worn out or have they just picked up grit and alloy debris which you can pick out. This is not uncommon.

    Hi all,

Many thanks for your replies - they really helped.

After having arrived home and reading John.T's post I took them off and had a look. There was a shard of metal about 2mm across in one of the pads so I've removed it and the problem has stopped.

Having done that and looking at the pad / block, you're right balthazar, I do need that type as the pads are firmly stapled into a piece of metal with threads which is attached to the TekTro.

Sorry Nick, I don't know enough about my brakes, let alone hydraulics.
