2005/6 Marz DirtJam Pro problem (of course there is.....)

I have a set of marz 2006 DirtJam Pros.... (don't snigger!)
They are a really basic fork, stiff as you like and heavy.
My problem is that during their travel, they make a 'metallic' clunking sound and feel bone dry. I can't find the manual that came with them and Marz site is a little confusing.
What could the problem be? They are almost like riding a rigid fork!!!
I am ultimately getting a set of rigids for playbike, are these worth taking apart? Servicing or just ride them as they are until I get new ones.....
They truly are a terrible fork! God knows why marz put them on perfectly good jump frames!

Yeah, basic, heavy and very oversprung.
Sounds like the need to be pulled apart and serviced, and oil changed (I beleive the pro has a basic rebound damper)0
