Hi Peeps,

I'm a newbie on here and mounatin biking in general after recently getting myself a Merlin Malt 1.

At the weekends I try to get up to Macclesfield Forest. However I was wondering if anyone knows of any routes closer to Wilmslow so I can go for a quick blast in the evenings straight after work?

Given all the greenery around here there must be something close.

Cheers in advance if you can offer me any help.

There's a great big place just to the right of Manchester called the peak district.... Get some maps/ guide books- ask for info.... But head up over there, some of the best riding in England, if not the UK.

Cheers Ratty. I already get up to the Peaks at the weekend. I was after somewhere I could ride in the evening. I live and work in Wilmslow so wanted a quick local ride so I don't have to bother loading the car and driving.

I live in Wilmslow too and to be honet there isn't much to get excited about.

When i moved there (after living a mile from Macc forest) the guys in Royles suggested going over to macc etc for decent riding! Not their fault, they were just being honest about what's on offer around there.

If you want a hack around you could ride over to tatton park, not far and you can get there fairly quickly via the back roads through Morley Green / Ashley etc.

Closer to home there are some bridle paths (flat though) to the west side of Racecourse Rd (which goes around Lindow common) - if you go down Newgate (off Racecourse) there is the old Newgate land fill on the right hand side which has been covered and landscaped and has various tracks around it, a bit small but it does at least have some short climbs to it. If you carry further down newgate, pass the kennels on the left and there is a bridlepath that connect Moor Lane to Morley Green, if you turn left towards Moor Lane there is the moor on your right and you can plug around there in the evening undisturbed (bit boring though)

If you ride to Alderley there is the cobbled hill Swiss Hill and a lesser known and rougher cobbled hill (which I forget the name of) which is first right after Artists lane heading out past the Wizard.

Sorry I can't be of more help - but it reminds me why I also now ride a roadbike as well as a mountain bike ;)

I'd suggest getting an OS map or checking one ourt on multimap etc and just try exploring a bit (for instance if you go down Moor Lane and past Ned Yates' there is a track that will take you all the way to the plough and flail for a pint:) )

Nice choice of first bike though :)

    try these maps
    http://www.bikemaps.co.uk/peak_district.htm
one of the maps (bollington /lyme park) you can go up through lyme park and follow the route map and once your used to the area use an os map to explore further afield. (ie marple, chinley, hayfield etc)
this would an ideal starting point for you as you could park near the boars head in poynton at middlewood way. this is only 4-5 miles away from wilmslow.

just remembered royles did sell these maps in store (probably still do) they also do a small route book for around marple.
the os map you need is ol1 the peak district
hope this helps, your not far from some quality riding

This is OK for a blast. Nothing exciting but you get fresh air and exercise from your door.

Best refer to an OS map with these directions as going from my head!
From Lindow Common, Boddington Arms on your right. Continue along and turn right onto Lindow Lane. Use the paths to come out on a minor road which when at the end of turn right to go past Ned Yates Garden Centre. Follow on and TL onto Byway that comes out near Plough & Flail. Keep on to road junction and turn right. Turn right onto Moss Lane. Turn left on bridleway after Moss Farm. Follow to road and turn right. First left then left again. Continue to Oysters Lane and turn left. Follow to a bridleway that runs at end of the airport runway (dont think this is on the OS map).Duck when the planes fly over! Follow to road, left for a minute then right onto bridleway. At crash gate 10 continue straight on. At next road turn left. Turn right onto Beach House Lane. Down to give way and TL.

You can then use lanes etc to go past Mobberley Station then back down Lady Lane to loop back to where you were earlier on.
