Brand New Bike - Chain Broke

Hi

I was riding my brand new Orange P7 S for ten minutes and the chain snapped ( the outer link seems to have bent outwards allowing the rivet to pop). In fairness I had came back onto the pedals hard from clumsy changing gear at the foot of an incline however this still seems completely wrong considering it had done a whole ten minutes work.

I am worried that the chain is faulty and may happen again if i merely replace the link. Do you think I should ask for a replacement from Orange? Or just replace the link and see what happens?

Also could I use the SRAM powerlink on my Shimano (CN-HG53) chain?

Thanks
Dave

If you got it from your local bike shop I would take it back and let them have a look. There are a lot of faulty chains out there.

If you got you're bike direct from Orange (I am not talking other mail order bike Orange direct) and have filled in the warranty card and registered the bike just give Orange a friendly call letting them know what happened. They will likely offer to send out a replacement if it happens again.

If it was mail order that can be a little bit more of a pain but its still worth giving whoever you got it from a call. They may ask you to send it back to them before they replace it though.

Yes a SRAM 9 speed (gold) link is fine on your 9 speed shimano chain.
  • Thanks for the info, I will take it up with the Cycle To Work provider i got the bike through and try replacing the link for just now. Probably with the SRAM link for future cleaning.

Chains can snap from new though, especially if loaded badly.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
