I have a Garmin 205. I use it simply to track my trips and then download the stats. Does anyone know how I can plan a route, upload it to the Garmin 205 so that I can then follow that route.

Hi. I've got a 205. There seems to be a variety of open source programs that convert GPS files into different formats. I gave up because of the limited number of waypoints the 205 can hold (and the time it takes to do all this). But, it can be done if you thinks its worth the effort. You could try this site: http://www.marengo-ltd.com/gps/

I'm currently plotting how to get a 705 without incurring the wife's wrath as the 205 is becomming to limited for me.

I use http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx. You can easily plan a route and download the file to your PC or direct to the Edge.

Just got a 305 last week and this makes it so easy.
  • Thanks guys will give 'em a go!

  • This worked ok but the route was a bit out...Is this because I did not add enough points?

    Any ideas...

I got fed up with trying to do this.... do you use Garmin Training Center to get it across to the 305, or some other software?

  • Does anyone have any ideas? I am in the same boat.

Also I heard there was a way you could trick it to let you use more than 100 way points, is this the case?

http://www.mapmyride.com is good. Draw the route you want and output a .crs course. This can then be loaded into the 205 using the Garmin software. You don't need to worry about the number of points, it does it all for you and to date I've never run out of memory.

The good thing about mapmyride.com is that it has a 'Follow Roads' option which can make it very quick to plot a route. Once I've created a route I get it across to my 205 by saving as a .tcx, loading into to Training Center and transferring to the Garmin.

The bad thing about mapmyride.com are the many adverts that litter the map window which are clearly designed to encourage you to buy the premium version....
  • I have an Edge 205 and also use mapmyride, uploading the courses via the Garmin software, and it works really well. I've plotted 75 mile courses without any problems, and it is easy to then follow the line on your screen as you ride. If you go off course all you need to do is ride towards the line again. It's a great tool and has actually revolutionised my rides as I'm not that familiar with the area where I live.
  • Tracklogs..Not free but you can upload and download courses to your Garmin 205/305. So much better than a route which is limited by waypoints. You'll then get a basic diagram to follow.

It's courses that you create using mapmyride so you're not limited by waypoints either.
