how many chainlinks

my trek 1.5 has a triple 50 39 30 and 26 x 12, 9 speed rear cassette and is brand new and the chain has 106 links my trek pilot 1.0 has 52 42 30 triple with 8 speed 25 x 12 cassette and has 108 chain links does this sound ok

Well it depends also on chainstay length, rather than just the gearing. So it probably sounds reasonable...

Frank the tank

Wrap the chain around the large chain ring and the largest sprocket, by-passing the rear mech, and add a link.

Just put the bike into big ring/small cog. If the jockey wheels are vertical (or close) then it is fine. As Red says chainstay length affects this. Your Pilot would need 1 extra link if all else was equal.
