Everyone's saying Armstrong... But I doubt it... :?:

My money's on David Millar, or one of the other Garmin-Slipstream boys. :D

A question for the fanboys - when exactly did Lance last win a 1-day race of any substance? Classics or semi-classics only please?
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I'd say one of Boonen, Petacchi or Pozzato

Well, he did OK in a series of Amstel Gold Races, although never winning it... But now? Milan San Remo? Everyone saying Armstrong? Not on this planet...

Lance won a worlds, but this is all beside the point.

Surely it's got to be between Bennati and Petacchi?
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Agreed. There don't seem to be many in-form puncheurs you'd fancy to have a go on the Poggio. Cancellara, injured... Pozzato, haven't seen him at all this year... Gilbert, completely inconspicuous so far this season... can't think who else might challenge.

Hennie kuiper won at 36 or 37 ...1985...Moser in mid 30s 1984-both won alone in ...Armstrong is capable of it if a move goes from far out...but no way if they hit pogio all together

Gilbert was quiet for ages last year, after winning Het Volk. And then up he pops and takes Paris-Tours.

Now we'll be able to see if Cav's capable of getting over the hills in time.

I'd give him a few years to mature at least... San Remo is definitely a classic which demands the strength that only age and experience can give you. 300km is a long way.

I'm not expecting him to win it this year, it will just be good to see how he copes with the climbs.

The obvious candidate of puncheur is Damiano Cunego, but expect he's looking to peak later in the season. Speaking to guys who have raced M-S-R, the TV coverage doesn't quite show the severity of the Poggio - most amateur riders struggle on 39x25 and these guys blast up on the big ring after 250km of racing and certainly don't see Cav having the strength at this stage in his career to be in with a shout - 300km is a long race.

Gilbert has got some issues relating to recovery, resulting in that Paris-Nice DNF, so I doubt he'll feature.

Can't start a thread anywhere without mention of the Texan. What an insult to the classics riders.

Urr as to who'll win, Haussler or Hushovd must be in with a chance?

Damn it - Davey beat me to it.

Bhima - I'd get a new bike shop - Lance for MSR ?? He cant win it cos he'd be too busy twittering through the race.

'Gonna give it a dig on the Cipressa'

    'Just attacking on the Poggio...'

'Heres me starting my sprint 400m out'

Looks like Boonen doesn't fancy Cavendish.
From others, Boonen doesn't expect too much resistance. "Cavendish? I don't think he will still be there when we hit the last two climbs".

They're dropping like flies - the beginning of this season seems to be particularly injury prone.

After all the French success in P-N and T-A, maybe a Frenchman will get on the top of the podium - would love to see it, maybe Chavanel, but won't hold my breath

I chose Boonen for PTP as he isn't winning as much as before...mainly due to cavendish and cause he's had some bad headlines...probably more desperate than if he had 10 wins already this season plus rainbow jersey on back...so, I think he will now take San Remo extra seriously as he can't bank on sprint wins

I'd put a tenner on Davide Rebellin ... He has stated that he wants to win before he retires, and his form is good again at this time of year... Only problem is that he doesnt have a massive sprint, and if it comes down to a group, he will be killed in the. I reckon there is a 50% chance of a bunch sprint, and 50% chance that the decent of the Poggio will provide a few escapers an opportunity.

If it comes to a sprint, I'd put a fiver on Rebellin's team mate Franceso Ginanni who had two good wins in bunch sprints this year, and if the young guy can handle the long distance and is in a leading group at the end, could do a good job...

If Basso wins, I will top myself... Im also wondering if Lancey-Pansey will try to escape on on the Cipressa for the laugh, like bettini did last year with Lovkvist

  • Expect Sylvain Chavanel to be up there if a break goes on or before the Poggio so saying him. Thor Hushovd if it comes to a sprint
