After the ride yesterday, and fu[king my knee up, i've decided to get gears :( I was really liking SS too :(

So what do I need?
- 9sp casette
- 9 sp shifter (slx?)
- rear derailleur (slx/deore??)
- cable and hose?
- i'm guessing some sort of chain guide as I have a single chainring upfront..

Anything else?

What stuff should I get? :(

What size chainring do you have on the front?

That'll give you about an 80ish cog = 25mph top speed on the flat with an 11 - 32/34 cassette - good setup

whats the difference between the SLX long and medium cage deraulleurs? *no idea*

Also, what chain guide? I'm guessing e-13 would be good, but haven't got a clue which one.... i'm thinking the SRS?

if you are keeping one ring on the front tou can run a short mech.

    and any device.

  • http://www.merlincycles.co.uk/?fn=produ ... egoryId=84 XT kit (shifters; front and rear derailleurs) might be tempting for £130.

    Awesome!! thanks mate!
  • No probs! If I decide on a hardtail for commuting, its almost tempting to buy this kit now and store it for when the original bits need replacing.

IIRC there isnt an ISCG mount on a surge, so you will need a BB mount chainguide, or get something like this. best to check on your frame though, an iscg mount will look like 3 bolt mounts surounding your bb cups
