Posh houses, pish roads...

Just back from a fab early spring ride through Barnet and Cuffley. On the B157 towards Cuffley, a thought crystallised in my mind - why is it so grimly inevitable that in areas with £1,000,000+ houses, the roads are so bloody awful? I spent about 3 miles hammering (or more accurately being hammered) along on a road that wouldn't look out of place with cows and tractors on it. Both hands went numb and my feet were in agony from the vibrations.

Whoever lives there must pay a fortune in council tax, I wonder where it's being spent?

Come and try some of the country roads around here in West Berkshire particularly north east of Newbury, Bucklebury area. Awful. And my Council Tax bill has just arrived yesterday.....

The roads around Cuffley are terrible. I'm sure all the Chelsea tractors don't help.

Any town, any county, the roads generally are awful.

Never mind council tax, the ROAD FUND LICENCE is enough to maintain all our roads, but of course that tax goes into the general coffers and is spent on all kinds things.

I fear the real problem is that you actually deep down want to live in those houses rather than be cycling past them .
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

The residents probably think the same, and probably complain to the council regularly about it, who will then ignore the complaints as they have much more important roads to keep maintained than one that goes into the back of nowhere.

The back of nowhere is generally the area of the county/SLAA (or what ever they are known as now up here) that votes a totally different way from the rest of the county.

Strangely enough - the posh 'footballers' area by me always has very nice roads.

Easy. The rich folk's taxes are going towards the poor folk's infrastructure.

I remember well the time our local (well-off) borough was merged with another (poor) borough. Our council tax went up, but our roads got worse* and our bins were emptied less often. Head a few miles across to the other borough - shiny new roads and bin lorries everywhere. Social engineering at it's best.

You'll never guess what political party forced the merger. And you would be positively psychic if you can guess the political inclination of the poorer area.

In Barnets case quite possibly, it is the most economically diverse Local Authority in the Country. They are very proud of this, for some strange reason.
