do rear mech spring wear out?

hi guys,
went out today, i got my bike from lbs yesterday, did about 19 miles on tar. i noticed that when i was in the bottom gears my chain was slack on top to the extreme that sometimes it would rest on the chain-stay. now i had a helpful message tennis match with nicklouse about my cassette wobbling on the newly refurbished free-hub, which nick assures me will bed back in, and i don't think that separate problem is causing todays problem. it's as if the rear derailleur is not doing it's job of keeping tension the tension in the chain. any ideas what could be causing this and how do i remedy it?
cheers

This sounds like the freehub body could be sticking, causing the casseete to rotate a little and the slack when you are freewheeling.
When pedalling there cannot be any slack or you wouldn't have any drive.0 -
This is seperate problem to the cassette moving slightly on the freehub body splines, if that was indeed the problem. Nick did ask about the freehub body.0

yeah it's just when i'm freewheeling  the free hub isn't sticking as it's just been refurbed, just had a thought tho, maybe one of my mech jockey wheel is stiff, this would cause the tension to be 'stuck' in the mech areaCotic Soul rider.0

Pretty sure it won't be the mech. The springs can go, but you should be able to feel the tension by hand. However the jockey wheel needs cleaning up and lubing.
Try pedalling backwards, what happens? Does it go slack? I think the freehub is the problem and hasn't been assembled correctly or the pawls are sticking. Have to look closely what is going on.
Also try turning the freehub by hand.0 -
yeah, i tried the free hub action yesterday and it's working excellently so it's definitely not the free hub, i don't think it's the play in between the cassette and free hub body, so i agree, i think i need to check the jockey wheels. to be honest that's the one component thats never been stripped and cleaned / serviced thoroughly.Cotic Soul rider.0

Best to service the mech then. See it how it goes!0

slack chain on top of the chain stay.
nothing to do with the mech. the freehub is sticking and the axle is trying to turn it causing a slack chain.
sounds like the bearings have not been seated correctly in the body."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

nicklouse,
you were right, took it back to lbs and demanded he stripped it, he did and then the dohh!! moment, he put the labyrinth seal in back to front. well spotted there buddy
