I've got ergo and standard on my bikes and I have no preference, though it is obviously a personal thing.

One thing I have found is that ergos bend easily in an off, the sharper elbow seems to be a weak point.

    Don't look as nice?

Never ridden without ergo bars so I can't comment on that front.
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

For small hands, they're fine. For me, when I'm in the drops, the edges of my hands go past the sharp bends, which hurts like hell.

You slide down the straight section till your habd rests on the lowest section. With a trad curve you can rest in any position.
There is a modern shallow ergo curve which looks good

I thought everything was "ergo" these days? Seriously? Anyway, I have a pair of
Ritchey bars that have a sort of "bump out" on the drops, for your palms, and this seems
fairly comfortable. However, claims of "plush comfort" and the like have never applied
to any bike or bike part that I have ever owned.:wink:

The anatomical bends are rarely in the right place.......seems silly to me to call them "Ergo bars" as they definitely aren't Ergonomic...

"Compact" bars are by far the closest to true ergonomic you'll find...

i have recently added some cinelli neo morphe bars which I think are described as being 'ergo' - they are awesome! - really comfy - a lot of thought has clearly went into the design of the bars and they are really very good.

    not cheap though.

I have to say, in general, i prefer the 'ergo' types to the standard regular curved bars. I think they fit in my hands better but I can understand why people would prefer one or the other.

The newer ranges of 'compact' bars seem popular - shorter reach and shorter drops seems to make a massive difference. FSA have a complete range of 'compact' bars which are worth a look.

What is ergonomic for one person isn't necessarily going to be ergonomic for another. A lot of it is going to come down to your preferred riding style as well as your positioning.

When i ride on the drops I like to be on the lower end of the drop most of the time not further up in the curve, so for that reason I've just swapped from Cinelli Vai's to Easton EA70 Ergos because the last section of the Easton bar is a bit longer and the transition is less pronounced.

Now if I'd been someone who liked being further up the bend with their hands rotated a little more vertically the VAI would probably be a much better bar.

Your decsion may also be affected by how you like lever / hood position on the top of the bars, some bars curve away making a flat transition nigh on impossible, some people won't be bothered by that, some will.

So you just need to find the bars you like - there is no right and wrong answer (even if your decision is based on aesthetics alone). For me, if push comes to shove, I'll go for what feels more comfortable after 3 hours in the saddle over what looks the best when i'm just stood looking at my bike everytime.

One perk of riding in a club is you can try what other people's bars feel like on their bikes before you go and spend your hard earned cash. I'd been tempted by the Deda Newtons until I had a go on them on someone's bike recently - they were completely wrong for me.
