First Bike - GT vs Scott ?

Hi there!
I hope someone out there will have some tips.
Being a total novice to mountain biking, I'm trying to make a decision between 2 bikes I've seen, the GT at my local halfords and a Scott at my local friendly Mountain Bike shop.
I'm going to be doing very light biking to begin with (road + trail).
1. GT Aggressor 2007 model - disc brakes with cable transmission, 21 speed, Rock Shox front fork with preload. Only £199!
2. Scott Aspect 55 2009 model - disc brakes with cable transmission, front forks with lock out and preload adjustable. - £350 (including £50 cash discount)
Initially I was only looking to spend £200-250, but having a chat with my local biking shop has got me thinking. I'm not sure if bikes have really changed that much since 2007?
I'm tempted to cheap out and go for the GT!
Any ideas.........?
Cheers

i will go for the Scott, if i can only choose between that two. the lockout fork would be handy for cycling on road. you should also look around online too as for the price of £350-ish you prop can find something better than the Scott.
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24063 - £400"It is not impossible, its just improbable"
Specialized Rockhopper Pro Disc 080 -
Better forget that BeOne Ten it has a Dart 1 fork.
If you can get yourself to a local Halfords I'd be looking at the Carrera Vulcan and Kraken models.0 -
Halfords have better bikes than that for the 350 quid. I'd avoid the GT, nasty cheap drivetrain.0

dart 1 is better than the forks on that two bikes (GT and Scott) tho."It is not impossible, its just improbable"

The Scott has the better forks - a hydraulic damping cartidge. The Dart 1 is a very very heavy, over sprung, flexy fork with no damping whatsoever.0

You guys are a wealth of knowledge!
So the GT has a nasty drive train..... interesting....
So I guess I'll not bother going for the cheap GT option.
Another thing was that I would prefer to support my local shop rather than the evil Halfords
I'll have a look into the BeOne10, sounds good
Another model I was offered was a FELT Q220 with mech disc brakes for around £350?
If there are any other suggestions I would def look into them.

If looking at BeOne, try this:

Superb fork for the money!0 -
Oh, the Felt is pretty poor.0

what size would the scott be?you can get a 2008 45, so hydraulic discs rather than cable, but one year older than the one you mention, from hargroves for 325. only in large though.
I'm pretty sure this is just one example among many. If you're willing to spend 350, and aren't tied to one shop, I'm sure you can do better than a 2009 aspect 55. This is why this thread might wander far...0 -

That's a steal!
Ameetcam - Don't be shy of V brakes at that price range, you won't notice much difference to a cheap set of discs and they should allow for a better fork, which you will notice.0 -

llamafarmer - the V brake issue is exactly what I was thinking about when I looked at that bike - its insightful that you said the fork is what you'll notice more. WIll the V brakes work ok in the mud? I'm thinking that they will as before disc brakes came out there were only V brakes!

Dudes
I am so tempted by that BeOne (even though I haven't come across one before)

Just rang them up and apparently no lockout on front forks :?

I've only recently got hydraulic discs on my new bike, before that I had 2 v-brake bikes (the first I upgraded from old school cantilevers - big improvement). The discs are without a doubt awesome, hugely powerful and as you say, better when it gets really wet and muddy.
But I always managed fine with v-brakes even in nasty conditions. I don't know if others would agree, but I'd much rather have better fork + v-brakes than worse fork + discs.0 -
Same here, the fork makes a big difference when the going gets rough.
Given that basic Toras for this year have an RRP of over 200 quid, getting a 9 speed equipped bike with one is truly awesome value!0 -

Totally.
I was talking to the guy at the bike shop today and he said because the weakness of the £ (taking into account that scott are american) prices have actually gone up!
I'm also looking at the Scott Aspect 40 2009 now (with V brakes!) as its actually better than the Aspect 55.
Unfortunately Im probably a medium as I'm 5 8" tall so don't think I could get away with a 2008 Large frame. Am going to have a look for the 2008 models though.....
(by the way - I like your name :avoidingmyphd). Funnily enough you're the 3rd person I know doing exactly the same thing! Must be something about the Phd life style that makes people avoid it!
