Chamois Cream or Petroleum Jelly?

Hi
I've just bought some Udderley Smooth chamois cream. I've never used anything like this before and was wondering whether petroleum jelly or nappy cream or something like that would have also done the trick (and been cheaper)?!
Also for those who have used chamois cream before do you only apply it once a day
Last question! Does using the cream really make a difference between not using it?
Many thanks
Richard

Assos is the only thing that keeps my gusset in tip-top condition. Applied reasonably liberally to the undercarriage pre-ride should last all day.
It's a personal thing though, some folk will come on here and say ordinary vaseline is good enough, doesn't work for me though. Try a few out and see what suits.
+ Mr Armstrong uses Assos, if it's good enough for him......Pictures are better than words because some words are big and hard to understand.

They do different things. Petroleum jelly is a lubricant while Assos is cream is primarily an anti-bacterial/anti-fungal. Some people swear by nappy cream but personally I prefer the Assos.
I don't know about the stuff you have, but the instructions on the back of the Assos tub say to apply to the damp chamois (after washing) and leave to dry. Works fine for me.0 -
Thanks for your replies
What is it that causes the soreness - lack of lubrication or bacteria? I would have thought it was the former in which case probably anything that lubricates your backside is going to help

Savlon cream works for me. Cheap and plentiful.Life is like a roll of toilet paper; long and useful, but always ends at the wrong moment. Anon.
Think how stupid the average person is.......
half of them are even more stupid than you first thought.0 -
+1 for savlon.
Strangley we now have two tubes of savlon as my wife and kids won't use the same tube as me - I have tried to explain that I don't scrape the savlon off my nether regions and put it back in the tube after a ride but they still seem reluctant to take the chance0 -

I've got a big tube of savlon and a pot of sudocrem in the house and might therefore return the tub of chamois cream and spend my £7 on something else!

There's going to be some friction between the tops of your thighs and the saddle but otherwise your arse stays in the same position.0 -
Soreness can be caused by shearing, friction, fungus (Trichophyton rubrum - cause of "jock itch"), and bacteria. The warm, sweaty environment is excellent for fungal growth.0

Here in the US this is very popular. http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod. ... balm_udder Not sure if it's available in the UK though. In any case it is a petrolatum/lanolin product with some antiseptic and other ingredients. Holds up very well for 8hr rides but it is harder to wash off than most chamois creams. In addition to the durability the price is a big plus. 3"x3"x3" container is roughly about £5. Shopping around on the internet may find a good deal with shipping. No, I don't own stock, just wanted to pass on some info about an alternative to some of the other super expensive creams0

I use Aqeous cream. Its cheap (3.99 a large 1kg tub) and is normally used to hydrate skin and moisturise. I used to buy assos all the time. No doubt its very good, but I cant afford to spend 8 quid every month (esp. if riding every day).
Aqeous is available from botts and good pharmacies.0 -
£8 a month! You're only meant to put it on your arse!
Seriously a tub of Assos cream should last ages - apply a small amount to the damp chammy. Then just let it dry.0
