Hi guys,

I am leaving my job on Friday (and no, I don't have anything to go to) and it's happened rather quickly (and no, I haven't been sacked. Not exactly) so I haven't been able to organise a swanky leaving do.

Do any of you know of a bar/pub where I can reserved a space for 30-40 people for Friday evening? We need proper beer and good wine available at not too expensive prices. Oh, and because you lose your hearing as you get old, and because I'm boring as well as old, no music.

Please, any ideas would be much appreciated...

  • There's a place on the Embankment .. .near Vauxhall Bridge lights... I forget what it's called.

I think they have an upstairs room you can reserve.

The Friday night crowd there can be absolutely dire though. I'd steer well clear.
Swim. Bike. Run. Yeah. That's what I used to do.

The terrace at Coq d'Argent is cool especially if it's not raining. Enjoy your break.

I work in the public sector. And am the best paid in the office. So, lovely idea, thanks, but probably out of our price range.
  • Been to one event here. Top notch, had a really good night

Class tunes, class venue and cocktails that are a little to more ish if you ask me..... . They don't have real beer unfortunately.

Or the Pilot Inn in Greenwich just done from the O2 if you want to get proper mental later. You have a place called Matter in there and I think it has a connection to Fabric

Went there a few years ago and it looked very classy. For those that remember the Profumo affair (I don't , just saw the movie), I think this is where John Profumo met Christine Keeler.

Is Tiger Tiger still around? I always thought that was the ultimate cheesy night out, and big enough to reserve an area?

Ignore my post above about Tiger Tiger - it has loud music!

Cori - where's your office based? You presumably don't want a long hop to the bar from the office door?

Good point, batman. We're in those gorgeous Nash buildings that border the north side of the Mall. So Soho, Covent Garden, etc good for us.

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I've tried most of them and they're all booked.

I thought there was the worst damned recession in living memory going on. Oh, yeah, that's why - they're all leaving parties.

Lovely place, not too noisy, not silly-pricey...
  • You have got Kingly 2 on St Martins Lane. Same theme as The Original Kingly Club accept they have Japanese restaurant up stairs which I have heard does some pretty fine food.

This is my local (when I'm in town) http://www.thecrownandtwochairmenw1.co.uk/# it has a bar upstair that I think you can book for private parties. It's a nice place and not too up itself for a Soho joint.

The Blue Posts on Newman Street has a big upstairs room if you fancy something informal and pubby.

think we might need a bit more space. would it be like a flash mobbing when all the cyclist meet in one place on a predetermined day and time with bikes and proceed to have a party

There are a number of Sam Smiths pubs with upstairs rooms, but I don't know which offer private functions. The eccentric Victoriana of the Princess Louise in Holborn, the Cittie of Yorke further east, The C0ck on Great Portland Street, and so on.

Not so 'central' but recommended all the same, The Artillery Arms is a decent Fullers pub just south of Old Street which has a bookable function room upstairs.
