Quick question about replacement chainrings
When you replace chainrings, do you need to use the exact same model from the same manufacturer or can you use rings from any brand provided they have the same number of bolts and the same BCD (bolt circle diameter) measurement?
My chainset is an FSA Vero triple (square taper job) and I've just managed to get a complete replacement chainset for a bargain price in Chainreaction's flood sale, however the one currently fitted to my bike has all black chainrings and the cheap one I've just bought has a black ring on the outside but the middle ring and the small ring are silver.
It's hardly a massive problem, purely aesthetic, but I'd like to investigate how much it would cost to swap the rings for black ones. It may well be more than I paid for the entire chainset given that I got it in the sale but at some point in the future I'm going to need to buy replacement rings anyway. However I can't find FSA Vero chainrings (specifically) for sale, so I'm wondering if any other rings will suffice if they have the same BCD measurement etc?

Yep so long as they are the same bcd and no. of bolt holes it will work fine. TA and stronglight make good aftermarket rings0

Thank you.
Is the BCD measurement stamped (or printed) on chainrings anywhere? Or is there any easy way to work it out? If not, does anyone happen to know the measurements for an FSA Vero triple? It was (and maybe still is) the stock chainset on Specialized Tricross Triples, if that helps.0 -
Oh, and I assume PCD is the same thing as BCD? Does it stand for Pitch Circle Diameter instead of Bolt Circle Diameter, or something?0

Correct.Tail end Charlie
The above post may contain traces of sarcasm or/and bullsh*t.0 -
One of FSA's chaps replied to my email, apparently my chainset has a 130/74 PCD. A quick look at chainring prices on a few websites has confirmed my suspicion that I have indeed managed to snag an entire chainset for less than the cost of a single inner ring, so I'm feeling fairly smug now, despite two of the rings being silver.0

To find the pcd if not stamped: measure the distance from the centre of one chainring bolt to an adjacent in mm. (distance referred to as x below)
From a little bit of geometry:
For a 5 arm spider / chainring: BCD = x / (sin36) = x * 1.701
For a 4 arm spider / chainring: BCD = x / (sin45) = x * 1.4140 -
Also, there's a handy chart here:
