Hi all
:?: Could a new chain cause a problem when changing gears on a front mech?
I have recently changed my chain and caused a further problem by not putting the chain on properly and writing off my front mech. (It got caught in the links).
Since then I have bought a new front mech (Ultegra), and in setting this up damaged my original shifters that came with the biike.
I have purchase new shifters and had trouble shifter on the front mech, therefore changed the front mech to a new one (Just in case it was faulty) however the shifters are still not working. (Which I have sent back and recieved back, saying there is no fault).
The only other thing that I have not changed over is my chain. (Which I put on brand new that first caused the front mech to bugger up) :?
So has anyone experiance a problem, when they have changed a train and what sort of problem did they have.
any steer would be more than useful.
Regards

I think it is very unlikely that the chain could cause the problem, even if you didn't join it correctly it would only cause a problem once per revolution. Most likely you have not set the front mech properly. It needs to be in the correct position, with correct cable tension, and with the limit screws set correctly (if the cable is tight and it won't move at all, it could be the limit screws are set entirely wrong).
Also, is the cable nipple properly located in the shifter - it is possible for it to come out of the little "pocket" when the cable isn't under tension, then the shifter wont pull any cable.
The Park Tools web site is a great resource for information on how to do these things, though if you are a complete novice then maybe a visit to the local bike shop makes more sense.0 -
Sounds like you would save a whole load of money taking it to a bike shop.Pegoretti
