hi all
today whilst cycling down canal towpath on my hybrid bike, a piece of twig caught in rear deralier and mangled the whole issue.

not wishing to push cycle 6 miles home ,went to local halfords for replacement deralier and fitting, was told new gear hanger was needed (the twig had snapped the original clean off ,and deraileir was mangled)

new alivio rear mech, gear hanger was fitted in half an hour, was supprised the bill was £61 £25 of which was the gear hanger no 2.

looking on the internet the dearest gear hanger seems to be about £16.

last year a rose branch caught in my old road bike and mangled the deralier ,replacement part cost £10 was much nearer home and fitted the part myself.

i have seen a few people fall foul of twigs etc getting tangled in rear deraliers , all on canal towpaths though.

thank you

Never had that problem in 25 years + of cycling - and it sounds like you have had your share for some time to come....

That seems about right, I've paid anuthiing from £15 - £25 depending on the frame, and then don't forget that Halfords aren't the cheapest store on the planet.

hello all went to my local halfords it seems they charge £8 for a gear hanger if they have one in store.

the branch i went to was bikehut .

if they have to order a gear hanger the charge then jumps to £25 (halfords)

looking at the one they fitted it has www.betd.co.uk on the side ,on the website my hanger is £16 as are lots of others for many makes of cycle.

going to ring bikehut tommorow just to confirm price is correct??

    thank you

It *is* a bit of a swizz. Unfortunately, if your in the position of needing one, you don't really have the option of not get one immediately. If you can wait, though, online is probably cheaper. I know edinburgh bikes have the hangers, and a list of what bikes fit each one, which is helpful.
