Slime = waste of time

Bit of a minimalist what with carbon bike, bars, seatpost and seat amongst other lightweight goodies. Almost went tubeless but couldn't be doing with the hassle so i bought some tire slime which was quite a sacrifice really as it probably weighs more than all the weight saved on other replacement parts put together. Anyway, no punctures for a while so i'm thinking jobs a good un. But no! in the last month or so i have had in the region of 8 punctures and the crap slime didn't seal one of them, not even the tiniest of them.
Dont know if many others have used this stuff, maybe i'm unlucky but my personal opinion is that this stuff is the biggest pile of biking pooh i have ever waste my money on. RUBBISH.

    And to top it off messy too?
  • Not had much joy with it myself in the past. It's failed to seal tiny pin prick punctures of the minutest magnitude and as Craig points out, it makes a horrible mess as it leaks into the rim.

    Slime = Fail.

    I find that it DOES work, but what they don't tell you is that a) you need to keep the wheel spinning and b) you need to keep pumping it up.

    I had a pin-prick puncture on Sunday, it was pissing Slime out all over but I kept riding and must have pumped the tyre up (hard) about 5 times - I had arms like Popeye when I got home! But, it did seal eventually and it's stopped up for over 24 hours now.

    I've also re-used tubes which have been punctured and sealed again.

    Admittedly it's not the cure-all that they claim and I always carry a spare tube and patches with me anyway. On balance it probably isn't worth it in the long run, but it will get you home at a pinch.

    When you give up pumping and try and change the tube you end up covered in green jizz.

    Shoulda just gone tubeless :wink: I've pulled masses of thorns out of tyres, especially when they're cutting the damn Hawthorn bushes around here. It's not really lighter than tyre + tube to be honest, I also find it a pain in the arse if you want to run with high pressure for any reason, for everyday riding though it's no hassle at all.

    Getting my proper UST tyres to pump up was a 2 minute job, converting the thin walled Schwalbe and Specialized non-UST was less fun ;(

    I've been using slime tyre liners for 6 months nw and had no punctures at all. OK they add a little weight but as one of my local rides has alot of bracken and holly about the trade off is worth it.

    For what it's worth, and from personal experience...

    Slime = pants (and heavy pants at that)
    Stans = not pants, very good in fact. Pricey but justified by the lack of flats once fitted.
