It's standard apart from a new front mech as that died a quick and sudden death but rides nicely. Might treat it to a new saddle and maybe some cheeky carbon bits at some point just for the look. I think it's jealous that my boat is made of carbon so don't want it to feel left out!

 - why the bars so high up?

Now that, I am not sure. That is how it came in standard form and I've never really had the guts to change it! It rides quite comfortably as it is. As a relative newbie to this (i've been riding for years but only ever ridden a bike as it was delivered!) what would lowering the bars achieve?

Lowering the bars would aid front wheel grip, by putting more weight over the front wheel.
It would also lower your posture, making climbing better, and decending 'worse' (*).
My bike arrived with the bars sky high aswell, and I slammed it straight down - as the headset comes a way up my steerer. - see here

Try a different setting for a week, take out half the spacers and put them on top of the stem - no need to cut anything. It will feel strange, but give it a chance and see how you feel. :)

(*) - The extra grip and feel you get can offset this feeling. - You could counter a nervous decender by dropping the saddle.

Ah right. Thanks for the info. I will have to give it a go and then report back with my findings! I've not done any 'proper XC' recently as have just been riding some trails with the girlfriend, but hopefully there is an Afan trip on the cards soon so will give it a proper test!
  • Seat post is pretty high too!! surely thats gotta be right on the limit of the minimum insertion mark!!

those forks look good with the frame tho :)

The seat post is on the minimum insertion. But to be honest, that is how I like it. Having a 'relatively' small frame is really nice for singletrack sections, and i guess it is also lighter. I will have to take some more photos as the frame is actually a dark chrome colour and hasn't come out very well. Lovely bike though, and basically half price when I bought it too.
