The tricky £1000 price bracket

So what to you go for with a £1000 to spend.

A good well spec'd Aluminium bike or a lower quality spec' Carbon bike. Is the Carbon at this level of spending of a sufficient quality compared to what you would expect to be decent grade aluminium??

Im thinking of the Cinelli Xperience and Colnago Primavera form the Aluminium point of view

and

Wilier Mortirolo (08) from the carbon side.

What makes most sense with £1000 in my pocket???

Not being considered are the Kiron Scandium (sold oout in my size) and the Focus Cayo - too god damn ugly.

Anyone got the bikes mentioned and have any thoughts?

    it doesn't make much difference.

i own a high-end carbon bike and three high end alu. bikes and have ridden plenty of low-end carbon bikes. high-end carbon does feel quicker on the hills, but other than that, although the feel is a bit different (carbon seems to absorb vibrations more, alu feels more connected to the road) ... it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other.

If you can get a really good deal on a high end Cannondale, Principia etc. alu frame and fit it with better equipment, then that might be the way to go.

£1000 buys a nice bike, but you really need nearer £2k before diminishing returns has really made further investment a largely non-performance issue.

Try and get a previous year's model reduced down to £1000 from say £1400-1500. But always get something that fits.

Caad 9 for the money you have to spend, its racey, stiff, light and a awsome climber, plus cannondale customer service is pretty awsome......Get it bought!!

If you shop around you might find an Orbea Onix 08 for around that money in a 105 build. I might be bias as I have one but having ridden several other upto £2k bikes I can honestly say what a nice ride it is. A tight rear triangle to give good acceleration and a not to racey front end to give a bit of comfort. Plus its a bit on 'the edge' as far as brands go.

For a grand I would consider building my own bike.

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=24212 is an absolute bargain and you could build a nice race bike around it.

    Cayo? Ugly? Are you sure?

Ive spouted off before about road bikes and the garish stickers and paint jobs!
Its not so bad I suppose. Nothing like to 09 model though!

To be honest I would be daft not to consider it. Good spec and great reviews it has to go on the list.

Im gald you have chipped in though biondino. I might start another thread on this as there is another issue that is concerning me. Buying without trying. I have been working on a list of possible bikes and I have 8 (so far). 4 I can test ride as they are in local shops and the other 4 I cant. Did you get your Focus from Wiggle and did you try before you buy? Everyone tells you to test bikes first and I will do with as many as possible but I fear some of the bargins to be had will be with online retailers ant the test ride wont be an option. grateful for any thoughts on the subject!

Wiggle will allow you to send it back within 7 days for a full refund if you're not happy with it. Just keep the original packaging (I know it's huge) and don't trash the bike.

Often overshadowed by the Cayo, personally I prefer aluminium to Carbon, but that could be because I am what is known as a 'sprinter'

It's a Culebro (not sure about the name though)
