My hardrock came with a Shimano Alcera rear derailer, i am looking to upgrade to a s 9 speed system, do i need to change the derailer?

I'd think so because iirc, acera only does 7 or 8 speed max, so you'd also need to change cassette.Start Weight 18st 13lbs March 2009

You can keep it, it will work fine.
Though it is clunky and heavy, might be worth upgrading too.0
