My hardrock came with a Shimano Alcera rear derailer, i am looking to upgrade to a s 9 speed system, do i need to change the derailer?

I'd think so because iirc, acera only does 7 or 8 speed max, so you'd also need to change cassette.

You can keep it, it will work fine.

Though it is clunky and heavy, might be worth upgrading too.
