I have the Record 10 gruppo. When I was buying it last year, a coupel of shops did actually indicate to me the Record wasnt materially superior to the Chorus - just the weight was better, and a marginally smoother transition, but overall not much in it.

I decided to go Record anyhow, since I felt I would alwasy feel why didnt I go the whole hog and just get the best. It was the right decision for me, as I know I have arguably the best groupset on the market now (bar the Record 11). The SRAM red I also looked at which has a fantastic look, but I hear of reliability issues and it constantly needs tweaking. Never really been a Shimano type, so it was Campagnolo for me.

But from what I hear, the Record 11 is in a league of its own.

FWIW components are very similar - Record often uses titanium fasteners in place of steel or alloy on Chorus. Record also has a black finish e.g. hubs / calipers for a more stealthy look, but my experience is that last/feel virtually the same.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

i would go for Super Record if I was buying again just because you get to a point where it's a f*** of a lot of cash and who cares about another £200 odd?

Either go Centaur (functionally 99% as good) or go Super Record is my take on it.
  • There's little difference between 11v Chorus and Record groups... The Ergos have been taken apart and there's no difference in the mechanism and very little weight difference with 11v (some functional difference between 10v Centaur 09 and 11v 09 which has a different ratchet and quite a different feel). The 09 lever shape is a massive improvement IMO though with the caveat that everyone's hands are different.

Most of the weight difference is in the cassette (although the Ti cogs in the Record cassette will wear faster), cranks and brake calipers.

It comes down to how much you want to pay for the Record logo and - more rationally if you consider weight important - the relative cost of saving weight here versus other parts of your bike.

I would either go Chorus or Super Record ... what's the point really in getting Record now?

The new Cult bearings are worth it if you can afford them, otherwise I'd drop down to Chorus - the new lever shape is a big improvement, but it does require a different set-up IME - the levers are further away, needing shorter reach bars or stem.

    thanks for the thoughts
like the tone of wildmoustache that basically reiterates the point that if youre gonna spank it then do it properly..especially if youre at the end of your thirties and as such effectively shxt at cycling unless youve been a pro (thats cyclist..) all your life. The super record here in NL is (on websites) around Euro1350 euro, the record 11 around Euro1125 and the Ch. circa Euro800. Add new climbing wheels (also needed) and a carbon bar (needed to complete the "im a rich twxt look") and Im looking at UK2200+. Bargin to get whipped by some Dutch 70 year old on a steel Gazelle 5 speed with rust. :D
  • I'd agree about Chorus or Super Record. Had that dilemma myself. There was post in workshop recently where someone had just fitted a new Ultra-Torque crankset. He was questioning why it didn't spin freely... I can tell you that Super Record cranks spin like crazy when they've just been fitted. That's partly a lack of seals on the cups - but boy are those bearings smooth.

There's a great post on another forum of some guy from the USA who has been riding his SR equipped bike out in the snow and ice and everything is still smooth.

Chorus is however better VFM and of course the ergonomics are the same.

One thing though, there is a horrendous lack of Super Record in the supply chain at the moment, so wherever you get it from make sure they ACTUALLY have it in stock. Don't believe any promise that it'll be here in a few days, next week etc.
