As you know supermarkets are selling front lights for 99p at the minute. The downside is that a) they are not road legal and b) the are as dim as a Big Brother contestant.

So I bought two ages ago with the intention of putting white LEDs in one to see how it fairs. Finally, this weekend, with the most cack-handed soldering imaginable, I did it. £3.60 worth of 0.2w white LEDs from Maplin. Its not even as bright as the cheapest opticube (which has a single 0.5w led) but it is almost on parr with the cateye 170 front light.
