Rear mech trouble...

Hi, probably a very nooby question....

I seem to have a problem with indexing the rear mech. I can index it occasionally but after a few days of usage the problem comes back. And now, i cant even index it at all. I have looked at all of the guides and stuff on the internet i could find and have not succeded.

Basically the problem is that it will shift up fine, but then i wont shift back down properly. E.g. it will shift from 6 to 5 just fine, no problems there, but when i try shifting back to 6, it doesn't move all the way back. It wont move all of the way back to where it should for a change into 6th. Also when i stand up to gain speed or something, it will just jump and then change gears, although this isnt every time. And i cant even get into the 7th gear, its becoming rather frustrating.

Should i take it to the LBS and get it sorted? I have litterally tried everything i can think of.

If it helps, the mech is an Acera-X model, i dont have a clue what year though as i dont know when the bike is from either.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

Have you tried cleaning the cables or fitting a new cable, this can cure a lot of miss shifting issues.

Poor routing/cable cutting and there seems to be the problem only when the mech spring is needed to return the mech.

Is the mech gunked up with crud?

Does it move freely without the cable attached?

I wouldnt be too surprised that its a bit dirty, it moves freely to an extent with no cable. so i think my next job will be to completely clean it of crap.

    Thanks
