Hi,

I am looking for some advice really as I want to upgrade to 10 speed on my road bike.

I am unsure whether to go with shimano or campag and I was wondering if there are compatibility issues between the two. Can I run campag shifters with shimano mechs or vice versa.

Secondly, if I go with shimano, is ultegra really worth the extra pennies or is 105 suffucient. (I ride at the weekends but I'm looking to start upping my road miles).

Thirdly, is campag different/better than shimano and which groupset would you recommend.

Any help would be much appreciated as this is a topic that I have little knowledge about.

Many Thanks

The can of worms is now officiallly opened!!

105 is absolutely fine. Best value Shimano groupset probably. Don't know about that "other" stuff so can't comment :wink:

I think there are instances where you can mix and match but someone will be along soon to verify that. However, if you are changing pretty much everything except the brakes, it will be more economical to buy a complete groupset if you shop around on-line.

    Gary.
Oh and I feel like I've been raped by an Orangutan  And I've got legs like Girders

My signature might suggest I am biased (ok, I am!) but there is really nothing to choose between Campag and Shimano, both are very well engineered products.

However, Campag is a better bet at the moment because of the currency situation with Centaur selling a fair bit cheaper than 105, and being at least on a par with Ultegra.
  • There are some great Campag groupset bargains to be had at merlincycles, eg. Veloce for just over 250 squids!

My LBS claim that Campag 10 speed shifters work perfectly with Shimano cassettes.

One advantage of Campag over Shimano is that you dont get the cables sticking out. This is only really an issue if you might want to use a bar bag which can give problems with Shimano (probably totally unimportant to most people but you never know).

another advantage is that the shifters are repairable- if a shimano one malfunctions it has to be thrown in the bin

mind you the bin is the best place for japanese junk

Not perfectly. If you're lucky and get it set up absolutely perfectly, it will shift. You have to index for the middle gear though to make the differences at either end small enough, and when the cable stretches even a tiny bit, the shifting goes to hell.

looks like a full campagnolo groupset then; i think it will suit by orbea better than shimano anyway. Any ideas, mirage/veloce, i probably can't stretch to centaur :(

I've mixed and matched Campag and Shimano no probs on my Specialised hybrid no probs - Shimano Deore 9 spd shifters with Shimano Ultegra triple chainset and Ultegra BB, at rear Campag Chorus 9 speed rear hub with Record 11-23 cassette, Ultegra long cage rear mech, Tiagra front mech when they were all metal, Shimano HG93 Ultegra chain. Changes are very sweet. Admittedly on my training bike Tek 1500 everything is Ultegra and my Condor Barachi everything is Campag Chorus, 10 speed. I think alot of the Campag/Shimano lack of compatibility is bull****. Maybe there are compatibility issues but as I say I've not experienced any, yet. Maybe it is just a tribal thing that Shimano and Campag are just trying to protect their ranges by giiving this impression. Critical components that need matching maybe the shifters and the mechs which I haven't mixed so therefore have not noticed any probs. If you can buy a complete groupset at a good price I suppose that has got to be the way to go but if you can't then it's not the end of the world. I daresay seasoned mechanics would advise against mix and match and are now apopletic at my heresy. Low and midrange stuff I think Campag is better engineered eg Chorus has or had the slight edge over Ultegra but then again Ultegra/105 is pretty good now. Definitely at the top Dura Ace and Record there is precious little in it. Each to his or her own and what you feel comfortable with if either of these manufacturers rock your boat so to speak. The law of diminishing returns. Tis better to have a good pair of legs. Having said that go for the best you can afford - the pyschological effect.

chorus is equivalent to dura ace 7800

    centaur is ultegra equivalent

record/super record is unmatched by anything the tackle manufacturer makes

If you are currently running shimano and you move to campag you may have to replace the hub on your rear wheel to take the campag cassette

    No you won't.

A Jtek shiftmate would ensure you could have perfect indexing with campag mechs/shifters and shimano cassette.
