As a geek who loves gadgets and cycling, I'm now desperate for a 705, and I can't really justify the cost. Damn you bikeradar peeps!

Will have to count my pennies when I get home this evening.

Page 23, handtec has frequently been the cheapest website when I have looked. YMMV.

+1. Ordered mine in the arvo, it arrived the next day.

It's a fab bit of kit, although the GPS is prone to slight errors, my top speed on Sunday was listed as 60mph, mmm I thought, given the wind and the steep hills - that's doable, then I looked along the line, max ascent = 60mph! Erm, nope!

S'funny. I got some really high speeds on sunday. I put it down to it being my first run with the PowerTap but could have been a GPS glitch. First time I've seen that though

Yeah, my 305 gives max speed errors too. I think it's when you emerge from under a tunnel or bridge or somewhere the GPS couldn't get a signal, then it has to make a jump from the last good point to the current location, maybe... Although thinking about it the timestamp should still allow it to work out speed correctly... Hmmm, dunno.

Oh, that I've seen. I tend to go full gas through Blackfriars tunnel but have to work out my max speed from cadence...

    Uh?

    You mean your wheel magnet/rotation?

When I go through blackfriars my speed is recorded, in fact, I beleive that if you've got the wheel magnet on that's the primary source of the speed reading as it's the most accurate, and it works in tunnels, and ,means you don't get speed spikes (max for me was 867mph before I realised it's best to have the wheel magnet on).

Garmin City Navigator for routeable on road stuff.

For off road there really is only the Garmin Topo maps as far as I'm aware, which apparently are disappointing, but still the best available.

You should be able to find both bundled with the unit for a good price.

Open street map has non routeable maps that are really very good.

If you like gadgets where it can take ages to find out about everything it can do then the 705 is gadget heaven (not to say the 705 is not as easy as pie to use, it's just got a lot of depth).

Actually that was a bit misleading. On the Pearson which has the 705 mount I didn't have the cadence/speed sensors set up for quite a while, they were on my Scott. Conversely, my commuter hack has a polar and the speed sensor is duff but cadence works, well it did until monday... need to decide whether I replace the polar sensors or get another 705 mount and speed/cadence kit

What polar sensor do you need, I've got a new CS sensor I don't need sitting on the side doing nothing.

Oo. It's a 3yr old CS200cad. Not really surprising the batteries are shot... and i've given the cad sensor a bit of a battering with my crank arm a couple of times lately when it slipped

I'm so looking forward to using the 705 when I'm back this week... so do I save my commute as a 'lap' or try to put it in as a 'course'?

If you save you commute as a course (i.e. start at the start then stop and reset and the end) then you can use the Workouts menu to SCR yourself riding the course, it even shows where you were on the previous ride compared to where you are now.

    Don't do it !

I just started commuting again after about 3 years of little cycling.

I put on my Edge 305 and thought "I know I will record the journies in and out and then I can see how I compare on different days"

Well, let me tell you....I don't like losing, even if I'm racing myself...the whole damn thing is going to kill me any day now I think....although I must admit the hills are getting a little easier after 180 miles of commuting.

    Yup, sage advice.

I turned it on tonight and followed my previous ride home.

I was doing OK but then, the embankment, with a strong headwind. My little triangle yesterday me had just turned into parliment square as I had just left it so I wasn't having that.

By Cheyne Walk it felt like my heart had migrated to behind my eyes and my lungs were burning (as I suspect were the lungs of the 10 or so people I'd dragged out the slower packs on the way past them), and I'd neglected to take my water bottle so my only comfort was slurping the sweat from my top lip.

Still, I totally pnwed myself by about half a mile though.

Might leave that off for a while, it's potentially lethal I suspect.

    ...right...thats it !

I'm switching training mode off on the Garmin now......means I will go slower on the way home which should give me a chance to find my lungs wherever I left them on the way in.

    OK. Right. Question:

I did my commute in London, held down the 'lap' button in the advised manner, then today (a day later) did a few miles in essex. The edge has logged this as all one activity.

How exactly, and I do mean exactly, do I get it to log that as 2 separate activities?

    Thanks in advance!

You need to press the reset button before your new ride, hold it down for 3 secs.

I now have my 705 complete with cadence/speed, heart rate monitor and european city mapping.

Used it on the turbo this evening and was very pleased with the heart rate and cadence info. Will be using it for my commute tomorrow morning on my fixie.
