Im plannign to buy a bottom bracket tool, Crank Puller, and Freehub tool along with the torx key for disk brakes, because all of this will come to around £30, i was wondering if there are any tool ktis around that price(up to around £45) becuase i feel that would be better value

The Lifeline kit from Wiggle, no real competition as far as I'm concerned...

Though it does have to be said, it doesn't come with the torq key  Also, no old-school internal BB tool, you get a hollowtech tool, so it might not actually suit you. Still, it comes with a load of other useful kit, cone spanners, spoke keys, cable cutter, chain breaker, etc. And all of the tools are good quality, they're not Park/Pedros/Snapon quality but they're not the usual rubbish.

It depends a wee bit on what you're after. If you already have regular tools- spanners and allen keys- then that counts against most kits, which come with horrible cheap standard tools... The Lifeline kit comes with less, but it's all bike-specific stuff rather than nasty adjustable spanners and allen keys, and it's higher quality. The Icetoolz kit is alright.

I've built up my own toolkit by buying the Park Tools as I've needed them, probably cost me a bit over the years but they are very good quality (I've learnt from bitter experience, poor / wrong tools result in nightmares and skinned knuckles).

DOn't forget even within the Parks Tools range there are workshop grade tools aimed at daily use and home mechanic tools which are cheaper but intended for less regular use.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

The Lifeline kit is great quality. I use a version of it, and as good as many workshop tools I used as a mechanic.
  • I've got the bigger Lifeline kit:

It's really good, I've not broken anything, and I haven't found it wanting anything else - so far!

(I got it for christmas 07, but I'm sure it was a bit cheaper then.)

  • edinburgh bikes have a revolution tool kit for £45 that has the gear you said, not sure about the quality of the tools, but i reckon it would be a good starter kit to build on

I had one of those for a couple of days but sent it back, there's not a lot of bike-specific stuff that the smaller kit doesn't have, and the other stuff- screwdrivers, t-handles etc- aren't great. You can build up off the smaller kit and get nicer quality general use tools for about the same (or of course lots of folks have them). Though the spoke keys are lovely, so much better than the ones in the little kit. Good t-handles are invaluable, since they get used a lot and if the tool ever slips you can be left with a mullered allen bolt in an awkward place.

Still, a very good option though for simplicity.

The Edinburgh bike kit, I don't like much, a mate has one and the tools aren't anything like as nice, basically they're exactly what you expect in a budget kit while the lifeline ones are just that much better. And I could be wrong but I'm not sure it has a hollowtech BB tool, if I'm right that's exactly as daft as my kit lacking the internal BB tool.

The Halfords is the same genric 'older' toolkit that we have seen a lot of over the last few years. Good kit, but no HT2 tool, and cone spanners could be better.

I was looking at this kit too and then found the following on probikekit.com

    http://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=T0053

looks exactly the same to me with the tools rebranded as their own, also slightly cheaper. :)

    Anybody bought anything from PBK?

Looks a good kit, but seems all the money has been put into the cone spanners and T bar allen keys. I'd get the cheaper kit!
  • From the same link above:

Looks to be the same manufacturer again as the lifeline kit and a reasonable deal
