Clickety Clack

My bike's making a clickety clack noise when i pedal, but not when i freewheel. It looks like the chain's rubbing slightly by the front mech...anyone have any ideas how to stop this annoying noise and perhaps damaging chafe?

    adjust the cable tension

    Thankyou kindly nicklouse. Will give it a go before i head out tomorrow morning. Off to Dalby for a pootle or to Hamsterley, depends on the decision of my riding partners...just can't face clicking my way round for hour after hour.
