Calling all London SCRers

Eureka moment tonight folks, when I was a lad living in Fulham we used to do a marathon once every year called the bridges run, basically we'd run from Tower bridge across and along each bridge until Putney approx 26 miles. How fab would that be for a SCR summer sportive ????

I'm not sure that you can access a lot of those sections now but if there's enough interest i'll find out.

Anyone interested?

Edit: okay so it might have only been 15 miles

    Hey

This sounds like the Thames Bridges ride organised by the stroke assoc, starts off in Tower Bridge and end up in Bushy Park I think, you go over most of the bridges. Did it last year, May time, good fun, very hot day I recall. About 35 miles.

    This is it here

Sounds like good fun :-) We can also pay homage to our holy ground and even summit Col De Putney - just remember to bring some newspaper for the descent :-D

Here's my suggested route, 25 miles crossing as many bridges as possible from Tower Bridge ending in RP

I found the charity ride route here:

    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/united-ki ... /408537556

It does go off road though around Putney bridge and at some other point, not sure where, not ideal for the road bikes. Final bridge is Kingston and it does do Richmond Park.

There were plenty of road bikes on the Thames Bridge ride last year and they seemed to cope - the two off-tarmac bits I recall were around the 19-20 mile stretch beside the river, and most of the route after Teddington (apart from a brief spell going through Kingston on road). The first of these stretches seemed fine apart from some narrow parts to the path.

The only other catch to this route is having to carry your bike up and over the river at the railway bridge at Barnes - the worst part was the congestion at the top as people stopped to have a drink or a breather, so blocking the bridge

I saw several people sign up to the ride on the day last year. It was quite warm - a beautiful day for such a ride. I would love to do more like this, but the cumulative sponsorship requirements become quite onerous. I'd love to do a London Bridges one, if I can make the date (if I can sneak my hybrid along  )

I think fgss have done something along those lines. Might have a root around and see if I can find any useful info.

I'd be proper up for it at any rate.

    Sounds good to me.

I did the Stroke Assoc. charidee ride a few years back. Was a really hot day and a great atmosphere on the roads/paths with all the other entrants. The 'off-road' sections after putney are along the river. Very pleasant but not for the best wheels on a roadie. I did the ride on an MTB. Shhh!

I was thinking FG SS or other such non roadie style would be fun after all there are few rides as flat as old London town.

I'm in, sounds like a job for the Pearson!
  • Just a thought, not wanting to get too specific.

The real start point on the East if you are counting ferries is Woolwich. (There are bridges & ferries across the Thames further East but [a] not London & too long long way away to be fun). For them as gets seasick  you can always walk your bike through the tunnel.

    Sounds good, I'd be in.

Woolwich to London Bridge is about 4/5 miles guessing so not silly and dependng on route you get to do some hills.

If you're going to start in Woolwich can I suggest taking in Shooters Hill, Greenwich Park, and then down to Tower Bridge via Jamaica Road. I'd stear clear of the A206, it's lethal, coming slightlly further inland and through Charlton will be much more pleasent.

Sounds like we have enough to make it worthwhile, this is def a summer ride after all we'll need to stop in a few pubs

Sore but healing - today I am more confident that my Saturday setback was nothing important. I just feel so vulnerable, knowing how much it would hurt if I had as little as a clipless moment!

But I am desperate to pick up the fixie, so I'll have to MTFU sooner rather than later.

London FGSS did this and had a huge number of riders, the feedback I've heard was that it was awesome but there's was a night ride to avoid such heavy traffic.

I'll be away so won't make it  but I'm sure you'll have a great time.

I'll join you at the start and then meet you at the finish line (a pub hopefully) an hour after you all have gotten there.

    I'm in if I'm able.

I've ridden down from Tower Bridge to RP on a sunday morning before, not taking in all bridges though, and the traffic has still been quite heavy, even early morning on a Sunday. In my experience we'd have to leave really early to avoid traffic
