Thought it was looking very dicey for the team for quite a while - a horrible time to try and start a new pro team.

It appears they still have no major sponsor and only 9 riders (UCI Pro women's teams are restricted to between 8 and 16 riders) but at least various subsidiary deals are sorted. They also announced the kit the other day:

Saw her out training in the p*ssing rain in Lugano last weekend wearing full team GB kit as opposed to any new team livery. Delighted that this deal came through.

It's bizarre that the Olympic, World and National RR champion has been struggling to get backing. Why is this so?

Women's sport is often seen as less marketable I guess, shame really as there is an up in the number of ladies I see racing now.

Should be good though as she seems to have taken younger English riders on board and they should benefit from her experience.

Who watches womens cycling with the exception of a few races its dire. Hardly any women cycle so not much market there. And generally companies are not spending, so hard to justify why when profits are down, they are throwing money at a cycling team. Look how big a flood there has been of advertisers out of F1 and football, which have multi-million audiences, not one parent and the dog.

I know it attracts a fraction of the funding that male pro cycling gets, but there are several womens cycling teams already, you'd think they'd be queuing at the door to sign her, no?
  • Mabye it comes down to money. Cooke is incredibly driven and maybe she is not willing to budge on price.

Her personal sponsorship was always fine as she's backed by Nike, SRAM, Mazda etc and she was in talks with one of the top teams (Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung I think), but had decided she wanted to start her own team.

She's been extensively quoted in the press on wanting to give something back and help develop young British riders after achieving all her ambitions with the Olympic and World wins. She's completed the full set on the road now - Olympic, World, Overall World Cup, Giro, Grand Boucle and virtually every major one day classic.

Problem is starting a new team at the height of the collapse in corporate confidence was always going to be a nightmare. Particularly in women's cycling which gets far less coverage and exposure despite the huge improvements in quality and quantity seen over the last ten years. Anyway they seem to have filled in a few blanks:

The lack of a name sponsor though has clearly led them to downscale the size of the team and their schedule for the year.

I went to Thruxton on Sunday to race, more training required for me.....but I spotted a Vision 1 rider there. It was Dani King who is mentioned in the article, she looked strong and won the ladies event with a comfortable sprint. Looks promising for such a young rider.
