Hi y'all. I've spent a fun day trying out hardtails and have now whittled down my choices to two:

Gary Fisher HooKooEKoo, £850, RockShox Recon, SRAM X9/X7 gears, Avid Juicy3 brakes

Cube LTD Race, £870, RockShox Reba SL, Shimano SLX gears, Formula Oro k18 brakes

Both seem like nice bikes: the choice seems to come down to potentially better finishing kit on the Cube vs a seemingly better frame on the Gary Fisher. Have I got that right?

Also, would shelling out an extra 200+ to get the Gary Fisher Big Sur be money well spent?

My cousin is buying a hard tail which I'll also be using a fair bit and I was looking at the HooKooEKoo for him. It looks like a very nice bike. There's a review here:

I think your right about the Cube having the better spec and the HooKooEKoo having the better frame.

Regarding the Big Sur, the cheapest HooKooEKoo I can find is £780 and the cheapest Big Sur is £1125. That makes a £345 difference which is quite a big leap - almost half again. Not sure if it's worth the extra, maybe someone else can comment?

I'd go for the Fisher - good all round performer, nicley balanced ride.

Passout, do you mean the HKEK, or pay the extra cash for the Big Sur (better fork, better finishing kit)?

Where I am, I can get the HKEK for £850 or the BS for £1150...

I think he means either Fisher. Anyone else have an opinion as I'm quite interested in these 3 as well?

Just thought I'd post an update... my C2W voucher came through and I went for the Big Sur. Had it just over a week now and am loving it!

Many thanks to everyone who weighed in with opinions on many threads... it was great to have so much accumulated experience to call on to help make the choice. In the end though... it was a case of "gut feel" in choosing between a clutch of bikes any one of which would I'm sure have done me proud.
  • Nice bike, the Big Sur. Picking mine up at the end of the month and cannot wait. had the same dilemma as you except i also had the extra of a Trek 6700 and Decathlon |Rockrider to choose from.

I've got the 2008 big sur. has something called G1 which helps with the steering.. the new version might have the G2.

I've had it just over a year and couldn't fault it.
