Again he could have sold me a more expensive model, however built me a Cheviott with a couple of upgrades, had it three years now, superb bike.

There is a little bike shop in an old petrol station around the corner from where I live in Formby (when I am home that is), run by four retired guys, excellent service and as they say a two hundred years cycling experience between them.
  • Have only used them a couple of times but Wallis (http://teamwallis.com/index.html) in Higher Walton just outside Preston gave polite, unbiased and useful advice.

I see no one's mentioned Ribble!
Never underestimate the stupidity of the general public.

Nolf, thanks for the Cyclopedia recommendation. I've gone to look in there a couple of times but in passing it didn't look to have much in there and parking is tricky so I've driven by. Must pay it a visit soon.
  • Blessed in Cumbria... Keswick Bikes, 4 Play Cycles in Cockermouth and Palace Cycles in Carlisle. All excellent, knowledgable and, with a few exceptions, non-patronising staff!

Got to stick my vote in here.
I live in Tamworth, and travel to my not so local bike shop in Barnsley - Racescene.

Totally honest guys and Mikey the Bikey is a brilliant mechanic.

Can not praise them highly enough for the advice, encouragement and honesty.

As most people may know, i am no stick insect climber, and the equipment choices i would make are not the ones i need. Racescene guys put me straight and often its a chepaer option, but that advice is priceless.

    +1 for RaceScene

Extremely knowledgable staff and always willing to point out what you need not what you want and what they don't know about bikes isn't worth knowing.

They take the time to get to know you as a person, not just treat you as a customer so everyone who goes becomes a friend and I've made a lot of friendships there whilst chatting over a brew and biscuits too.

Well worth the trip if like Howie you live some distance away...but for me it's my LBS which is even better!!!

+2 for RaceScene. They will not 'over sell' to you and will give you good honest advice.

The best service I've had (and still get) is at Barnsley Bicycle Centre. They guy who runs the shop has been there over 20 years and is very knowledgeable so can give the best advice. Not pushy and competitive prices. Superb. A real gem.

It's been mentioned already but it's worth another mention - Epic Cycles.

Chris spent a lot of time with me, picking out the right bike, setting it up for me and adjusting it. He didn't try and sell me anything over my budget. In fact he checked twice when I said I wanted a groupset upgrade which would push me over my original budget. His prices are very good and it was definately worth the 250 mile round trip.

I've also had a good experience with Cycles Dauphin at Box Hill. I took in my GF's entry level Bianchi with gear problems. They got out a screwdriver and attempted to sort the problem out there and then, with no charge. Unfortunately it needed a bit more work but the cost was very reasonable, even if they did comment on the weight of the bike and cheapness of the components :?

Another vote for 53-12 in Colchester.

I've found they won't try to sell you something you don't need.

I went in expecting to buy a new wheel (as 2 other LBS has told me I needed to) they suggested they could repair, and several hundred laden, pot-holed commuting miles later its still 100% true.

Its this sort of thing that gets repeat business.

I didn't buy my bikes from them, but I probably will the next one.
