Price hikes again.

Hmmm... not sure about other brands but Shimano seems to be getting more expensive by the day. Just an example Ultegra SL in Dec 08 £93.... Last week £134... this week £167. And that is the cheepest I could find too.

I understand the reasons why but the price hikes are hitting hard and with finances the way they are I am having to seriously cut down my spending. If the prices keep going this way I would imagine the price of bikes being affected again soon.

Are you guys having to cut down purchases because of the hikes too?

I noticed that too. I just went onto wiggle to see what tyres you can get, and saw Continental Gatorskins had gone up around 25% or so in the space of a month!

I thought we were going into deflation?

We are but these are bought against the exchange rate. The pound isn't that strong so prices are going up.
Bike prices are not being affected really as most manufacturers are using lesser components to hit certain price points.
Lots of the bikes where I work are now coming with things like Tiagra rather than 105.
I to am having to cut down on my spending so have stocked up on good deals with cassettes and chains to last me a year or 2.It will also make me think if I really need to change something oe if I'm doing it for the sake of doing it.

Yep, Wiggle put up its Tyre prices 3 days ago - 2009 Open Corsa CX's are now £40 each, Open Pave's are over £41 each.

Last week, Rubino Pro Tech's were £14.50 each approx - now they're £25 quid each - substantial increase.

I paid less than a £100 a year ago for Dura Ace pedals. I think they were something like 10% off at the time.

I doubt the price will go back down. Whilst people are paying them whether we have a choice or not. The prices may flatten out but not go back down.

That's why Japanese exports fell nearly 50% in Jan. I can't see the exchange rates swinging back in favour of the pound any time soon, so you either pay it or not bother. I'm not bothering this year, especially with job security at such a low.

Michelin Lithion tyres at Wiggle have gone up by £8 in the space of 2 days.

I was going to buy a pair but you can keep them at that price, Wiggle

Theres still a lot of bargains to be had on ebay mind you.

I have just stocked up on all the bits I think I will need for the next year. Inner tubes, tyres, co2 carts, new bib shorts that were cheap (for Castellis) etc. It is quite scary to see the prices go up so much. My Dura Ace wheels I paid £435 for are now £630 from the same shop.

I just hope that the prices come back down IF the pound gets stronger.

... so much for "deflation"... just goes to show what little the govenement, the banks and a bunch of economists know ! ... 2 years time we'll have interest rates at 15% and they will be trying to get £ to revalue and choke off inflation ... they are all Bloody muppets

Supply and demand will obviously affect the price to an extent but the fundamental issue here is that the prices of all foreign-made bike components have increased purely through the exchange rate changes over the last few months (and I'm sure there may be other reasons too). Retailers simply can't sell at a loss (except to clear stock or to avoid bankruptcy, maybe), so they'll have minimum prices at which their margins make sense, and these minimum prices will be considerably higher than they were last year.

In leaner times I'm sure fewer bikes and components will be being produced so there probably won't be a huge surplus and bargains galore in a few months. Everyone, from the buyer to the retailer to the manufacturer, is tightening their belts.
  • My guess is that unless the pound strengthens again against the yen, we will see a big increase in off the peg bikes being equipped with Campag, instead of Shimano. For example, the new Ribble sportive is a grand for the Centaur group, but £1100 for the Ultegra.

Are you sure you have this right way around.

BTW - I brought centuar about 7 years ago because it was £90 cheaper than Ultegra !

I'm not sure how this will work. Will my share just arrive in my account or will I need to apply somewhere? I heard that they're doing £150bn in total, so between 60m of us that's £2,500 each. I'm planning to buy a new best bike with mine. Can't wait!
  • The weak pound has had an immense effect on cycle parts, so glad i had my Yeti built first week of Jan cos it would have been at least another 6 or 700 quid If I'd specced it today

Try buying stuff in Ireland. 60 Euro for a Pro Race 3 tyre in LBS as opposed to 25 Euro on PBK website. You guys have it good.
  • It's nice to see a fellow Yeti rider on the forum.
